Hi computezrmle,

Computer is an Apple M4 Mac mini

All LHC Theory workunits fail with this result in the event log.

VBoxManage: error: Cannot run the machine because its platform architecture x86 is not supported on ARM
VBoxManage: error: Details: code VBOX_E_PLATFORM_ARCH_NOT_SUPPORTED (0x80bb0012), component MachineWrap, interface IMachine, callee nsISupports
VBoxManage: error: Context: "LaunchVMProcess(a->session, sessionType.raw(), ComSafeArrayAsInParam(aBstrEnv), progress.asOutParam())" at line 921 of file VBoxManageMisc.cpp

VirtualBox does not emulate the CPU as well, so Mx mac is not supported for these tasks, I don't think Vbox would support CPU emulation this is complex to my understanding and the performance would be poor.

Your Docker seems to be runnign fine.

Message 53451 - Posted: 20 Apr 2026, 16:18:28 UTC - in response to Message 53442.

Toby Broom already mentioned that the VirtualBox app will not run on your Mx Mac (since the guest is x86_64 based).

What may run is the Theory docker app, but it reports an error since it requires /cvmfs to test whether a local CVMFS client is available.
Although running a local CVMFS would be the preferred solution I suggest to first test the following method.

Creating a subfolder directly under '/' seems to be a pain on MacOS.
See here for a possible solution and report if it works:

Thanks Tony,

I didn't see the messages from vbox, no more wasting time on that then!
My older Intel Mac appears to be working well with lhc.

"Your Docker seems to be runnign fine."

I got the idea podman wasn't working, I'll try and follow what computezrmle has suggested withe synthetic link.

Cheers
Glenn.
