Check this one CP
https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/workunit.php?wuid=239577923 This could become harsh for you MQM.
The too late but valid result was on a 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1340P and with docker. IMO docker is faster than VBox.
Your machine is a i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz, so I doubt your machine will return on time.

Well there is nothing special about the one that did get a Valid with Docker (I only have Docker running on one of mine)
That is just a Intel i5-1340P with only 12GB ram and it finished after Report deadline https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/result.php?resultid=433369520
I have three of the i7-3770 CPU with 24 and 28GB ram usually running CMS but for the last couple months running Atlas and when they were empty I ran some Theory
That host with the Run time 12 days 17 hours 42 min 31 sec has another one like that (this is over 9 days) https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/show_host_detail.php?hostid=10870847 but most of them are the usual shorter ones.
Most of my 882 Dockers are one day version or less but I have a few over 2 days https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/show_host_detail.php?hostid=10870847 but have run thousands of Theory without Docker (some of mine also run Einstein GPU's at the same time with both Docker and VB)
But then none will mow my lawn so I was doing that today
(forgot to mention I also have 352 Dockers finished over at -dev but nothing to do there right now) one of my longer ones there is Run time 4 days 11 hours 36 min 47 sec
CPU time 4 days 5 hours 58 min 1 sec

The herwigs are still running in their integration phase: Integrate 713 of 760 and Integrate 637 of 760

I have 4 tasks that have been running between 24 and 29 days. I had a computer restart a few days ago and they all resumed. How can one look up some kind of progress status on these? They're docker tasks on Windows 10.

The result reports two successful exits: job: run exitcode=0 and boinc_shutdown called with exit code 0
Mine was a resend of an original "Timed out - no response" task, but that 1st result returned although too late (7.4 hours too late) was marked valid after the 11 days deadline
The workunit with the original and my invalid marked result: https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/workunit.php?wuid=239656481
Pity for me, but interesting are the run times of both. Docker for me and VBox for the too late one.

The PC running Theory VBox is a AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and my machine a simple laptop Intel i5-6200U.
Conclusion: LHC@home should stop running the VBox version of Theory - much too inefficient

That's not a valid conclusion.
The wingman's task restarted a couple of times, which does not reset BOINC's timers.
The last run succeeded and the scientific scripts report "cpuusage=363417" (in seconds) which is much lower than yours.
Beside that nobody knows the total load on both computers during computation.

You're right. I did not check in his result, whether it was restarted.
Normally a Theory-taks should survive a VBox-restart. So when it didn't, the state of the VM was not properly saved and restored.
When I take the last run, his task lasted 4 days and almost 8 hours wallclock. Mine 5 days and 14.2 hours.
That's for my tiny laptop with 2 real cores (4 threads), running most of the time 3 Theory long runners and using that machine for daily work, not so much longer.
You may have read on the dev-forum my posts where I did some tests to compare exactly the same Theory job on the same machine and same conditions when running with docker or with VirtualBox.
The last post with the comparison of 1 job: pp zinclusive 8000 -,-,100,170 - pythia8 8.306 tune-AU2m 100000 650
vbox: Run time 5 hours 7 min 54 sec CPU time 4 hours 57 min 50 sec
docker: Run time 1 hours 54 min 10 sec CPU time 1 hours 40 min 49 sec
Edit: To keep this thread on topic, I added new VBox/Docker comparisons to the dev-thread: https://lhcathomedev.cern.ch/lhcathome-dev/forum_thread.php?id=739

I looked through that file but I'm still not sure how to get progress info out of it?

There are several sections to the file.
First is covers setting up, input parameters, temporary files and the like. (This section is about 50 lines long)
Next comes the unpacking the histograms (after about 50 lines), lots more configuration stuff (up to about line 100)
More setting up of temporary files and locations
Resolve the process parameters
and now we get to the first "real" section of calculations (matchbox & herwig)
the progress of this stage is recorded in a number groups of lines that look like
determining subprocesses for p p l l j j
building matrix elements.

Now there's a few lines of results (interim results)
Now comes what is often the biggest section of the file - the Herwig integration
As ever some parameters are listed
Now progress of the integration
First is a line that gives an indication of the number of steps to be completed
Integrate 1 of 760:
Next is whole raft of groups of lines similar to these:

As you can imagine this last stage can take many hours or day to complete, is very difficult to break the process as unless you stop and thus save the task properly (it's no use just closing the BOINC GUI you have to stop the virtual task as well) the whole job will start afresh from the very top.

Thank you for that explanation. None of the logs for those 4 tasks really look like that. They don't all look the same but here's what the shortest of the 4 logs looks like.

The log format varies with the input parameters. The message that you responded to described a log typical of a particular type of job, herwig7. You have a different type, herwig++. The general form of initialization followed by execution followed by finalization holds true across all types. The initialization phases generally begin the same but diverge from there.
Look at the first line of the log. All the logs that I can recall seeing begin the same way, with a runRivet line that contains a timestamp and the input parameters. In order to know what to expect in the rest of the log, we need to look at the input parameters. Fortunately, in your log these are identified a few lines further down. Input parameters:
mode=boinc
beam=pp
process=z1j
energy=8000
params=-
specific=-
generator=herwig++
version=2.7.0
tune=UE-EE-5-CTEQ6L1
nevts=34000
seed=660
The generator can be herwig7, herwig++, pythia6, pythia8, sherpa, among others. This is probably the most important factor affecting the format of the log.
The beam can take several values, e.g., pp, ee. The process can vary. At the moment I can see jets, ttbar, zhad, zinclusive, z1j on my system. The tune varies a great deal. The nevts (number of events) is most often 100000, although it can be anything. I'm guessing that the seed is the starting point for a linear congruential pseudorandom number generator to provide reproducibility.
Most of the logs will contain lines of the form 87400 events processed for each 100 events processed. Once this reaches nevts, the job moves on to finishing up.
Error or informational messages in the log can be voluminous, so some searching may be needed find the progress messages. Unfortunately there is at least one generator (not in my list above) that emits no progress messages for an extended period (hours) then quickly finishes successfully.
Looking at last bit of the log you provided, it looks like the herwig++ job had trouble processing the first event and got stuck. If it were mine, I'd use the 'Abort' button in BOINC Manager to get rid of it and move on to another job.
One way to check for progress is to look at the timestamp on the log through the web interface. Use the 'Show graphics' button in BOINC Manager then click on logs in the Test4Theory page that loads. If the timestamp on running.log is old and doesn't change within a reasonable time (refresh the page) be very suspicious that the job has become stuck.

Yesterday, during the scarcity of tasks, I got a resend being a long-runner: Theory_2922-4897018-721_2 from workunit 240119396
===> [runRivet] Fri Mar 27 21:23:00 UTC 2026 [boinc pp z1j 7000 125 - herwig7 7.2.1 nlo 33000 721]
pp z1j 7000 125 - herwig7 7.2.1 nlo ==> 958000 events done after 49 attempts whereof 29 success, 3 failures and 17 unknown
Busy at the moment with Integrate 145 of 760: after 15 hours and 20 minutes of runtime.
Task version _0 ended due to wsl_init(): no usable WSL distro
Task version _1 was EXIT_ABORTED_BY_CLIENT after 17 hours 4 min 8 sec
If you want to run docker Theory's, use at least BOINC version 8.2.8 or even better 8.2.9
Edit: This herwig7 job running on docker finished rather quickly.
Run time 3 days 5 hours 42 min 30 sec
CPU time 3 days 1 hours 40 min 28 sec

Any reason to keep these two tasks running?
First one has been running for 7.5 hours and seems to be stuck.

In reply to Garrulus glandarius's message of 2 Apr 2026:
Any reason to keep these two tasks running?
First one has been running for 7.5 hours and seems to be stuck.

Second one is approaching 6 hours, also seems stuck.

As for your powheg-box
Those tasks don't update the log in the middle of processing but they usually succeed.
I suggest to let them run, even if they need a couple of days.
As for your pythia8
It reports "nevts=15000".
This points out the corresponding runspec didn't get enough results with "nevts=100000" from the last run(s).
Hence, nevts had been reduced (maybe more than once).
This can either point out
- it requires complex calculations that need much more time as expected (=> further reduction of nevts)
- a bug that causes all task to hang (=> needs a code revision at CERN)
Feel free to either let it run for up to 10 days or cancel it.
