On Windows, each unit is taking 8 threads, is this normal? CPU is maxed, memory is not and neither is the SSD.

This is on Windows using Vbox, my Linux box can run any LHC project fine and still be responsive.

You said you're on Windows so you're running VBox units.
There's a small overhead running VirtualBox.
You didn't specify any system details, so it's possible you've choked the CPU's cache on the Windows box but the others aren't as loaded.

You can set the number of cores used per work unit in your project preferences. if you want to run a different number on each machine you can also set up different profiles with different settings.

5950x, 128gb ram.

It based on your settings in the project config, you can choose the number of threads per WU

On you Windows PC
Go to the VirtualBox site and download the Extension Pack that matches the version of VirtualBox you have.
Open the VBox Manager app
Click File, then Tools, then Extension Pack manager, then Install.
Navigate to where you saved the Extension Pack file and select it.

Do the same with the Linux PC.

The extension pack is not required nor does it help to reduce the load on the host.

"They" are the VirtualBox developers, right?
Sure, "they" didn't wrote the extension pack just for fun.

But that's not the question.
The facts are very simple and easy to understand:
The extension pack is NOT required to run vbox tasks from LHC@home.

In addition:
Even if it is installed it does not help to solve the load issue from the OP.

Nobody claimed Vboxwrapper has been written just for fun.
And, Vboxwrapper is part of BOINC, not part of VirtualBox.
