Message 49302 - Posted: 29 Jan 2024, 14:30:26 UTC

Hi all,

I joined the LHC@home project a short time ago.
In the past all worked really easy by registering for a project and adding it with the BOINC Manager.

For LHC@home I currently only get the message that no new tasks are submitted by the scheduler. Currently I'm a little bit confused, I followed the checklist but I haven't found anything where I could directly say this is the issue.
Is there anybody who may be able to help me?

Kind regards,
Power

Sorry, I forgot to change this setting. Now you should be able to see the machine.

I'm currently running Windows 11 23H2 on a Ryzen Threadripper 3970X with a Radeon 5700XT..

Message 49307 - Posted: 29 Jan 2024, 15:50:25 UTC - in response to Message 49306.

Your computer details show this:
"Virtualbox (7.0.14) installiert, Prozessor besitzt keine hardwareseitige Unterstützung für Virtualisierung"

LHC@home has only 1 subproject that does not require VirtualBox (SixTrack) but it's queue is empty for months.
All other subprojects require VirtualBox with hardware virtualization being enabled.

There are a couple of reasons why this doesn't work reaching from "disabled in the BIOS" through "RAM protection must be disabled".
Check the forum for posts explaining it and follow the advice given there.

In addition, "Run native if available?" must be disabled for computers running Windows:

Thanks, your hint helped me to find the root cause of the issue.
Seems like an update has changed something in my installation and now I have to completely remove Hyper-V and Docker to run Rosetta and LHC.

The issue is solved.

For some weeks I've not been getting any LHC work.
The computer concerned has virtualisation enabled (in BIOS), RAM protection disabled (in BIOS), run native disabled (BOINC options & on website).
Today I noticed this set of lines:

01/02/2024 08:45:12 | | Number of usable CPUs has changed from 8 to 6.

I'm confused!
The computer has 16 cores (8 real, 8 hyper-threading or whatever AMD call it), and I allow BOINC to use half of them. Currently there are 4 CPDN tasks running, and given their known fragility at re-start I'm loathed to stop & restart BOINC to get a copy of the first 30 line of the log.

Thanks, but....
When I check in the BIOS SVN (AMD's version of virtualisation) is enabled - I dissabled it, rebooted, then shutdown, enabled and restarted just to make sure. Now I am really confused, unless BOINC isn't re-reading the computer configuration correctly at restart/re-boot.

But, on checking the various services required fr VM to run were actually running they were turned off.

Now trying to see if setting them to automatic works and I have VB running.

Have you checked BIOS for an upgrade?
Don't know, why Windows 10pro doesn't accept Hardware-Acceleration.

VM was working, but this appears to be a "windows" issue as until a couple of weeks ago. Now trying to get a "clean" copy of VM to see that has been corrupted as reinstalling BOINC didn't give me the expected messages about installing VM version, despite downloading the BOINC + VM installer that says it includes VB 7.0.6......

Let's try reinstalling BOINC & VB

You fiddle around at the wrong end of the chain.
Whatever you do, as long as your BOINC client reports "no hardware virtualization" the project will send no tasks that require it.
And the BOINC client just reports what it gets from your OS.

The root cause of the issue is Windows, better (mostly) compatibility problems between Hyper-V components (Type-1-hypervisor) and VirtualBox (Type-2-hypervisor).
Since Type-1-Hs always start before Type-2-Hs they exclusively lock hardware ressources which then can't be allocated by Type-2-Hs any more.

So, if I turn OFF hyper-v, and make sure VirtualBox is on I should be able to get the VB running, and thus get some LHC tasks (if any are available)?

"Just turn OFF"....
40 minute later, several re-boots and I'm seeing the first LHC ATLAS simulations downloading, along with the expected(?) ATLAS v-box image (all 1.7GB of it).
OK, sit back and wait for the next fun instalment, but for now I think I've earned a drink.

Not getting any errors that I know of.

You have the same set of issues I had. Something (Microsoft??) decided to sneak in an update which launched Hyper-V and Hyper-V prevents Oracle VirtualBox from running. The not so simple solution is to unpick Hyper-V from your system (you need admin privileges), it can take a few re-boots to get rid of the last vestiges - search for "removing Hyper-V from a computer), allow an hour or more.
