Some days ago, the Boinc developers released the new VB wrapper (26204) with support of multi-attach mode with differential disk images. It wil be introduced also in LHC@Home projects?? |

Impatient volunteers can test the new vboxwrapper. 1. download it from the BOINC website: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/vboxwrapper_26204_windows_x86_64.zip https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/vboxwrapper_26204_x86_64-apple-darwin.zip https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/vboxwrapper_26204_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu 2. (on Linux) "strip vboxwrapper_26204_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu; cp vboxwrapper_26204_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu vboxwrapper_26204_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu vboxwrapper_26196_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" 3. If you run CMS tasks In <BOINC directory>/projects/lhcathome.cern.ch_lhcathome/ replace vboxwrapper_26196_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu with the copy of the new vboxwrapper while the BOINC client is running 4. New CMS tasks will use the new vboxwrapper but not all of the new functions. Check stderr.txt in the slots folder for differences. A BOINC client restart will download the old vboxwrapper. Nonetheless, this may be helpful to see whether the executable from the BOINC website remains stable even under heavy load. The new functions require some tests to be done at the dev project first. This mainly affects changes in the backend processes. |

A little guide for Windows will be welcome!!Unzip the zip to vboxwrapper_26204_windows_x86_64.exe and make 2 copies into the lhcathome.cern.ch_lhcathome directory. To avoid downloading the original older exe's from the project put a line in cc_config.xml: <dont_check_file_sizes>1</dont_check_file_sizes> in the options part. Reread config files. Save the older exe's for backup purposes and rename the copies of the 26204 version to the 26198ab7 version for Therory/ATLAS and to 26203 for the CMS version of the wrapper. Restart of BOINC is not needed and wait until you don't have running LHC-tasks. |
