Message 44535 - Posted: 23 Mar 2021, 11:07:48 UTC

I am consistently getting the following messages in the event log for LHC since January of this year.

Tue 23 Mar 2021 10:56:01 GMT | LHC@home | Fetching scheduler list
Tue 23 Mar 2021 10:56:02 GMT | | Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
Tue 23 Mar 2021 10:56:03 GMT | | Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

Can anyone enlighten me as to why?

boinc v7.16.14 running as a service on openSUSE Tumbleweed[/i]

Is your BOINC client attached to any other project and gets work from that project?
If "no", check the BOINC client installation.
If "yes", reattach the client to LHC@home using this URL:

I am currently running 7 other projects that are getting work. I'll try reattaching LHC.

This is for example a Computer from you shown in your Computerlist.
You had finished tasks in the past:

I see that a BOINC client from your account recently got work from other projects.

Did you recently (within the last few days) reboot your computer?
Do you use 1 BOINC instance for all projects or do you have a separate instance for LHC@home?
Do you allow unlimited internet access in the BOINC settings or did you set any restrictions, e.g. by time?

Do you run a firewall, on the crunching box or elsewhere, that rejects/drops packets to/from CERN?
To test the basic communication use the same account that you use for the BOINC client and run:
ping -c 2 lhcathome.cern.ch
nc -z -v -w 10 lhcathome.cern.ch 80
nc -z -v -w 10 lhcathome.cern.ch 443

Do you run a local Squid?

Did you really reattach the computer or did you just a project reset?

Yes, I am running work for a number of projects without a problem.

I have rebooted after a major openSUSE Tumbleweed update recently. But, the problem started before that.

I do use one instance of boinc running as a service.

I do run the boinc client with runtime an network preferences, but not too restrictive.

The firewall on the client box does not drop CERN packets. I have run LHC@Home for many years without network issues.

[mickjh@Quartz1 ~]$ ping -c 2 lhcathome.cern.ch
PING lhcathome.cern.ch (137.138.156.174) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from boincai01.cern.ch (137.138.156.174): icmp_seq=1 ttl=49 time=360 ms
64 bytes from boincai01.cern.ch (137.138.156.174): icmp_seq=2 ttl=49 time=385 ms

--- lhcathome.cern.ch ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 1000ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 359.877/372.475/385.073/12.598 ms
[mickjh@Quartz1 ~]$

[mickjh@Quartz1 ~]$ nc -z -v -w 10 lhcathome.cern.ch 80
Connection to lhcathome.cern.ch 80 port [tcp/http] succeeded!
[mickjh@Quartz1 ~]$

[mickjh@Quartz1 ~]$ nc -z -v -w 10 lhcathome.cern.ch 443
Connection to lhcathome.cern.ch 443 port [tcp/https] succeeded!
[mickjh@Quartz1 ~]$

I do not run Squid.

I definitely detached and reattached the project.

Hmmm, when you install Boinc not as a Service, but regular?
Do you have Boinc Version 7.16.11?

Might need to turn http debug or have a look in journalctl for boinc.

boinc block project somehow and host not attached at all.

The basic network tests succeed but the ping times are very high.
Up to 385 ms.

Mine are up to 37.4 ms (worst case).

This doesn't explain all your trouble but can be an important factor.
Can you describe your network more detailed?
- LAN cable or wi-fi
- how many devices in total
- connection to your ISP

Greger's tips are also very helpful.

You may also think about what you changed mid of January.

RAM for this OpenSuse PC is 3.73 GB. You need more RAM for all Projects excluding Sixtrack.

That is not relevant to the issue here.
