Hi all

it's been a long time I don't participate to LHC, having a brand new iMac with lots of threads and lots of RAM I decided to participate again.

The theory task I got (not native, VB task) crashed after a few seconds.

2020-12-13 12:51:26 (92566): Starting VM. (boinc_3295bc59a61cabd2, slot#16)
2020-12-13 12:51:26 (92566): Error in start VM for VM: 1
Command:
VBoxManage -q startvm "boinc_3295bc59a61cabd2" --type headless
Output:
VBoxManage: error: The virtual machine 'boinc_3295bc59a61cabd2' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1)
VBoxManage: error: Details: code NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005), component MachineWrap, interface IMachine
Waiting for VM "boinc_3295bc59a61cabd2" to power on...

2020-12-13 12:51:26 (92566): VM failed to start.

I've been using the machine on some other projects for a few weeks now without problem, but it is the first VB based application I'm starting on it.

VB seems to be properly detected at startup

09-Dec-2020 17:04:11 [---] VirtualBox version: 6.1.16r140961

Exactly the same did happen with LHC@Home-dev.

Any idea ?

Thanks !

PD : mmm I changed my preferences on both projects to deactivate theory app (in the default pref / my machine is on the default since there is no location in the machine list page) and guess what, LHC-dev did took it into account and sent my a CMS task, I'll see how it goes, but LHC didn't and sent me more theory tasks !

PD2 : well CMS also crash the same way on LHC-dev...

Not sure but might be way if like to digg in to virtualbox forums for MacOSX:
it point to https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=87306 for this error code

There is one solution on stackoverflow to try:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/52689672/virtualbox-ns-error-failure-0x80004005-macos

This error seems to appear with VirtualBox installs on versions of macOS 10.13.

To fix this issue, you have to uninstall VirtualBox (use the VirtualBox_uninstall.tool of the VirtualBox downloaded dmg).

Then, install it again executing VirtualBox.pkg. At the end of the install, go to System Preferences, Security and Privacy, and the click the allow button :

Could be that Oracle was blocked in Security & Privacy? Give it a try to allow it[/code]

Thanks for the feedback, i'm about to leave for holidays but I'll try it when I'm back.

I remember having a message about allowing Oracle at boot time, I was wondering "what app from Oracle exactly ?" but I would say "yes", a few times... I also know about this security page requiring allowance when installing certain types of applications... but I haven't tried LHC since then, I think.

I have another VB boinc application crunching without issues (QChemPedIA), so anyway I'll try again and let you know.

Well I tried to do this : to uninstall I had to authorise the app you mentioned in security & confidentiality / general tab, because it was blocked.

After uninstall, I reinstalled it all, but then no authorization was required there, all went through.

And in the confidentiality tab I found no reference to VirtualBox or Oracle.

I have to wait for some high priority tasks of another project to finish and I'll give it another try...

It's been crunching OK now since yesterday !!

I am running 13 CMS tasks on my 40 GB / core i9 iMac : it's stops crunching at max 13 tasks because of the crazy memory requirement, 4 GB per task, but it's working !!

Happy New Year to all :)
(starting well for me ;) )

???
CMS VMs use 2 GB, Theory VMs use 630 MB.
