Been away for a GOOD number of years, recently re-added BOINC w VB... that's new lol.

Anyway, I'm sad to see Seti is no longer distributing tasks but unless I'm missing something somewhere. It seems neither is LHC. Can someone maybe try to help me figure out why I'm not DL'ing anything for the LHC project ?

Ty.

Edit: After some light reading, I did notice there are now some subsets to the LHC project, that said, my prefs are now: Run only the selected applications (all applications)

Going to update on the BOINC side and wait.

As you can see from the server status page (below computing menu) the old 'normal Boinc' tasks of sixtrack/sixtracktest sub-project are currently not available. The ones that are available require the VirtualBox to run (on Windows, on Linux Theory and Atlas tasks can be run natively). The VB tasks are notoriously tricky to get running successfully and require some configuring and care to do so. I suggest that you first read Yeti's checklist here: https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/forum_thread.php?id=4161&postid=29359#29359

A few items to notice:
- Virtualization has to be enabled in BIOS
- These tasks need constant 'good' internet connection when they are running
- CMS and Atlas tasks need a lot of RAM to run (min. about 3 GByte per task and Atlas requires even more if you allow it to use multiple CPU cores per task) and they are quite long (usually somewhere between 4 to 24 hours).
- Theory tasks require about 700 MByte per task and their runtime vary between 7 minutes to 10 days. Some of them don't even finish in that time but get aborted after 10 days
- They usually don't like to be interrupted when they have started (you may survive a fast reboot but not an overnight shutdown).

So if you are ready for a challenge, go head.

Well, the options I ticked did get me work. As for the BIOS, it most likely is enabled bec I seemed to have done and submitted work with the box already. That said, all I have noticed thus far is Theory and CMS downloaded.

As for my system which is Win 10 Pro, it runs 24/7 sans a weekly reboot on Sundays that I believe I disabled some time back for one reason or another. As for my internet connection, not that I suspect this bit matters, I have a dedicated IP. But that also being said it's a wired desktop direct to the Nighthawk router I have that's running DD-WRT, not that I suspect that it would matter even if I were to wire it to the hub instead.

Lastly, as for mem... without looking at my settings page here (same for all projects I did/do which right now is just LHC "Was 4+ years back, SETI included").

I don't recall exactly what I have set. But total system mem right now is 8gb, soon to be expanded to 16 (maxed) when I come up with the $80 to get a 2x8gb matched pair.

But ya, I seemed to be up and running out of the gate as one may say soon as I ticked the previously named (all) options. But the system is rarely used in a manner of speaking unless I decided to play a game or something or fiddle around on Coinbase with the desktop, which even then, is just looking at the graphs on to open web pages on screen 2.

Edit: As for the CPU, System Info says it is an i3-6098p @ 3.6 2 core 4 logical processors. It's by no means a fancy system but all indicatations say it's working just fine for right now, but the added mem does take notice as being needed.

You can read the rules when you write a message!

Rules:

The image in my signature does not meet any of those requirements. I'm not commercially advertising or linking to anything explicit. Nothing hostile or threatening etc etc etc

IF, IF a mod replies and points out which rule I'm breaking with a valid argument I will remove it along with the project from BOINC.

Edit: I'm calling it a night and will address any potential moderator replies / concerns tomorrow.

But total system mem right now is 8gb, soon to be expanded to 16 ...

8 GB RAM would be the minimum if you plan to run CMS or ATLAS without doing other "heavy" things.
16 GB RAM would be much better.

BUT:
Your computer details page states this host has only 4 GB RAM (3.95)
https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/show_host_detail.php?hostid=10659361

Theory will work but CMS or ATLAS will dramatically slow down or even fail.

BTW:
It's not explicitely mentioned in the rules but if your avatar is based on copyright protected material it should be removed to avoid legal problems.
In addition, you may edit (if possible) your post 43073 and remove the line starting with capital letters.
This is definitely not kid friendly.

Hard restart, isn't it?

Insomnia sucks, figured I'd check in...

Crap, you're right. It is 4gb lol

But system can max at 16 if I'm thinking of the right system. Will have to check the models tomorrow / waaaay later today.

But as for my avatar, that makes sense more than me thinking dude was whining about my sig.

But copyrights can't be argued with, so that I can immediately comply with.

As for those magical three letters, that I can't seem to edit as you made a valid point as well to which I will apologize for.

So one can say the question was asked, for all sub projects, what is the ideal memory ? Or would 16 be feasible. I can't do anything about it now, but I am at some point going to want to replace the system as a whole. This is just a fly by night desktop I couldn't exactly pass up on. But can't argue on why I shouldn't pay the what now app[ears to be a $65 tag on the memory modules (will def need to double check the system before buying it) even if I planed on, but can't, upgrade the system as a whole within the next 3 months.

Also, hard restart ???

Edit: But ya, short of Heavy Things, whatever that means bec it's tech open ended. Aside from two open Chrome windows side by side on screen 2 displaying BTC & LTC on the Coinbase site. The only thing ever that's run (screen 1), and not constant like the open windows which yes I know will use mem. Is Ultima Online, a game I started 20 yrs ago, took a long break (2014 to present) and recently returned to 1 yrs ago.

Edit 2:

Maximum Memory: 16GB
*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.
Slots: 2 (2 banks of 1)
Standard Memory: 8GB removable

It was a free system, so not gonna complain about my standard being 4. But at least I was right about the max being 16 which I can get from newegg right now on ebay for $65, just gotta find funds to do it which I tech could breaking into my Coinbase investment. But given a large number of factors, while $65 might be a sm number. I'd tech loose so much more in the grand scheme of things if I deducted that right now.

Had to do a swap on the memory bec I originally had the wrong voltage, but I got the system maxed at 16gb now with 50% while in use set and 75% not in use. But even before, using just 4gb for the one stick. It seemed to be running Theory and CMS just fine, all be it slow. But now it seems to be chugging along better, obviously, as I'm typing this ;-)

I may tweak the while in use and not being used numbers later, but for now I'll leave it with the 50/75% values.
