Message 43044 - Posted: 13 Jul 2020, 11:29:17 UTC - in response to Message 43041.

The last line for the Windows Theory task is:
RIVET=/cvmfs/sft.cern.ch/lcg/releases/LCG_96/MCGenerators/rivet/3.1.0/x86_64-slc6-gcc8-opt
Task is running, running, running... (ftm 30 min.)

Nothing changed, but Theory-Task finished.

Message 43047 - Posted: 13 Jul 2020, 14:44:14 UTC - in response to Message 43043.

This can be found in the VirtualBox manual:
"Oracle VM VirtualBox shapes VM traffic only in the transmit direction, delaying the packets being sent by virtual machines. It does not limit the traffic being received by virtual machines."

Beside that the BOINC client source code shows that bandwidth limits are only used for the client's own network traffic.

Conclusion:
Downloads initiated by a process inside a VM can't be (bandwidth-)limited by the BOINC client.

This was a Theory-task in Windows, no VM!

Of course it was a VM.
What else?
BOINC client -> vboxwrapper -> Theory VM

Say a Linux Volunteer.
Have it seen with my own eyes. Boinc had reduced the Bandwidth. This was seen in Windows Taskmanager.
No more comments from me!!

Thanks everyone.
It's going to take me a while to work through all of your comments and suggestions.

I did reduce LHC to 1 job but left it at 8 CPUs.
My internet connection is 50mbps fibre to the premises, but that is shared with several other computers and smart TVs.
The Theory Simulation started and did a some processing (13m 49s), but then it stopped with the same 'probing' error is before.
VB also says that the display virtual memory needs to be 9MB and the controller should be VMSVGA. (I just updated both.)
I haven't looked at VB network or Windows firewall except to add the BOINC data directory to exclusions in Windows Defender.

Here's the BOINC Properties of my last Theory run:

Does this limit also apply to CVMFS downloads from within the VM, or only to traffic for the Boinc executable itself?

Sorry, there are two problems in one thread.
This is a answer for the other problem here, Bradders.
Have CVMFS download not checked. The Theory task was interrupted at this RIVET Line shown in VM-Window.
RIVET=/cvmfs/sft.cern.ch/lcg/releases/LCG_96/MCGenerators/rivet/3.1.0/x86_64-slc6-gcc8-opt
After half a hour the task was going on and finished.

Hello Bradders,
this two message at start of your Theory-task:
2020-07-14 04:13:52 (2792): Guest Log: Probing /cvmfs/sft.cern.ch... Failed!
2020-07-14 04:13:52 (2792): Guest Log: 20:13:55 CEST +02:00 2020-07-13: cranky: [ERROR] 'cvmfs_config probe sft.cern.ch' failed.
didn't stop the task, so it running and running.
Maybe, your network is not so stable to connect correct the Server sft.cern.ch.
You can test it with a other project, to see more, for example WCG.
Boinc have message-prefs to see what happens in the boincmanager.

My internet connection is 50mbps fibre to the premises ...

This is usually fast and stable enough, even if a couple of people are watching TV or doing other stuff.

VB also says that the display virtual memory needs to be 9MB and the controller should be VMSVGA. (I just updated both.)

LHC VMs are created by the task (by vboxwrapper) and should not be changed. The display settings are not relevant for the scientific app, hence that complaint can be ignored.

The problems are indeed caused by the failing CVMFS probe.

Could you try to manually download the following URL from the same account that you use to run the BOINC client?
http://s1cern-cvmfs.openhtc.io/cvmfs/sft.cern.ch/.cvmfspublished

Could you check whether that download is blocked by a firewall, a virus protection or something similar?

BTW:
sft.cern.ch is not a server name, its the name of a CVMFS repository.
