LHC@home

I am trying to run boinc directly from cvmfs, but the jobs start and fail immediately, no output seems to be generated. The machine is running Scientific Linux 7.7, user namespaces have been activated:

1. just want to run tasks from LHC@home?
2. develop a new method to start a BOINC client from a remote location?


In case of (1.) it is recommended to install a recent BOINC client on your computer and attach that client to the project.

In case of (2.) you are a BOINC expert who knows how to work around a couple of errors that appear in your logfile:
- Missing working directory. Where should your client create it's logfiles or it's /slots/ directory?

I just want to run tasks from LHC@home for backfilling the HPC machine. I have been following the instructions from ATLAS. Quoting their docs:

Installation
Installing requires your BOINC authenticator from LHC@Home to connect to the BOINC servers. It can be
found here
One liner
/cvmfs/atlas.cern.ch/repo/sw/BOINC/BOINC/boinc --attach_project
https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome boinc_authenticator
Only CVMFS is required. This command starts a BOINC client process, which will connect to the project,
download and run jobs until the process stops. It will use Singularity from CVMFS.

So we're supposed to help debug a computer that you've hidden that's set up according to instructions we can't read? Is this a wind-up? If so it's three weeks early.



Which user are you running the boinc client as? Where is it to create its various working directories? (CVMFS is read-only.) Does the said user have permissions to create/write into those directories?

I'd start by creating a suitable subdirectory (e.g. "MyBOINC") in your home directory on that machine, and then run the given command

/cvmfs/atlas.cern.ch/repo/sw/BOINC/BOINC/boinc --attach_project https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome boinc_authenticator

from within it. Then tweak preferences in the web GUI to limit BOINC usage to leave resources for other users. Installing a known good release of BOINC locally will help get things working - SL7 can get one from EPEL. Bear in mind that Theory tasks can take more than four days of continuous running to complete successfully, so it doesn't strike me as a good choice of sub-project for padding out fluctuations in CPU usage.

OK, I have asked an Atlas member, I was supposed to disable all applications but Atlas in the LHC@home settings.

Anyway, I am now running a test job that is Atlas only.
