Message 41382 - Posted: 27 Jan 2020, 14:30:00 UTC

I'm sure you all are tired of seeing this message. I'm running the latest BOINC client (7.14.2), and have tried moving from Virtualbox v5.x to the latest v6.x version on Windows 10... and every day, just as when I was running v5.x, I continue to get a message from LHC@home stating that Virtualbox is not installed.

I have tried uninstalling and cleaning all instances of a Virtualbox install, and reinstalling from scratch, and still getting this error.

Does anyone have a fix for this issue on a Windows machine? I can't find many suggestions in the forums or FAQs. Thank you in advance. :)

Short answer:
Enable VT-x in your system's BIOS and ensure other hypervisors are deactivated/deinstalled (e.g. Hyper-V).

More detailed:
Visit Yeti's checklist.

Thanks for the suggestion... I did all that. I followed this checklist pretty closely. I used that LeoMoon CPU-V tool and got 2 green checkmarks as well. Hyper-V isn't installed. :(

Sounds like it could be a problem with BOINC detecting virtualbox, maybe reinstall BOINC?

Have you tried turning it on and off again? No, really, try shutting down and restarting. Check client_state.xml which is generated with each BOINC client shutdown(!), under <host_info> mine lists virtualbox_version.

According to the LHC@home DB entry your computer reports an "Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5420" running 8 cores:
https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/show_host_detail.php?hostid=10542445
The same page reports that virtualization is not present.

According to the intel datasheet this CPU has only 4 cores and no hyperthreading:
https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/33927/intel-xeon-processor-e5420-12m-cache-2-50-ghz-1333-mhz-fsb.html
Did you tweak something?

Hum! Thank you... that's interesting! I will dive into my BIOS to confirm that virtualization is enabled. Strange that the LeoMoon tool reports back that I'm properly set for virtualization... I am definitely running this machine as-is, and have not tweaked anything. I'm showing 8 cores and 8 logical processors on my task manager.

Thanks for the deeper dive, guys... gives me something more to go on! :)

Could it be that your computer had maybe "dual Xeon" motherboard... and there's 2 of those CPUs underhood ?

So interestingly enough, Virtualization is enabled in the BIOS, and it's showing as enabled in the Task Manager as well. I guess it seems to be misreported by BOINC?

It looks like a couple of LHC jobs have finally appeared in my queue again after I hit the "reset project" button, so I'll keep my eye on it to see if it complains again![/img]

FTM you have only sixtrack running. This is the only Project without Virtualisation.
