We are very grateful to have been chosen for the BOINC Pentathlon of SETI Germany over the next days. For this, the Sixtrack team has submitted a huge backlog of jobs, and our servers will primarily distribute Sixtrack tasks over the next days. There will only be drip-feed of other applications for now until our backlog is reduced. For fans of other applications, stay tuned or run Sixtrack for a few days.

I was thinking that it is like a herd of locusts. (But I am going on a trip to Utah shortly, and it is famous in their history.)

I fully agree. I am not sure whether this is a good idea.
A big part of LHC is paralyzed, most probably for several days :-(

As one of the "locusts" may I say that we, the guys that donate computer time, use these "competitions" to inject some interest into an otherwise rather boring pastime .

The assumption on our part is that we are bringing a lot of computer power to the projects thus helping to get the results sought by each project somewhat sooner

It seems likely to me that a number of folk doing this will be getting their first taste of LHC work in the process

Perhaps a presumption on our part is that an organisation the size of LHC would be well able to handle the additional resources made available for 3 days. This is perhaps not so based on the validation rate of 1.8% that I am seeing currently.

So, for those that find this onerous you have my apologies. You can be back to normal in 3 days as it was not chosen for the 2 week long stint. which is on World Community Grid

There's no assumption. Every project is inquired before hand. If they don't reply (like MilkyWay) they are left out.

Glad to see some new Atlas tasks being sent out still instead of 5 second SixTrack.

It really doesn't seem like it at this point, the truth is it seems like your deliberately slowing down validation as much as possible.

And this is where the largest backlog of completed work units are.(Atlas) It probably would have been better for everyone if you had just said you didn't want to be a part of it before hand rather than deliberately cripple the pentathlon.....

During the pentathlon, we see doubling the BOINC CPU capacity - this is a fact we clearly realised with the 2017 edition, and probably this year will confirm the figure. First numbers show that most probably we will have 1-2M tasks assimilated in 6d - something that normally happens in 12d in periods of high load by SixTrack during regular BOINC activity.
As main contact person for SixTrack, I can say that for us the BOINC pentathlon is a period of great grace - as it is a grace to have the CPU power given for free by you, the volunteers.

Presently, the backlog of tasks waiting for validation has lowered to almost regular values - I think it will completely dry out in a couple of hours...

I am running SixTrack both on my main Windows 10 PC where it alternates with Atlas and on my HP Linux laptop. The second Windows PC, now on 8.1 updated, runs in the Science United frame MilkyWay tasks and Asteroids tasks, both CPU and GPU. But it has credited me with 22 LHC tasks which I never saw running. It's a peak in the graphic display the first day I switched to Science United following the advice of Dave Anderson. I gave Astronomy, Physics and Chemistry as my interests but so far I saw only astronomy tasks.

Just to add to Alessio's reply, as service managers the pentathlon is a good real life scale test of the system. It identifies the bottlenecks which we will attempt to address after the event. Any code improvements will be pushed back upstream so all BOINC projects will benefit. This year the scale is 50% more than last year. It also puts extra load on us as administrators as we have to watch the system more closely and intervene to work around issues as we find them but it is only for a short period of time.

I would like to thank the admins of LHC who helped us this year with the Pentathlon. When problems arose you responded quickly and did a great job fixing problems.

It is a shame that some of the normal users were "inconvenienced" when the compute capability of the volunteer force was suddenly doubled. But of lesser importance, I guess, at least the project received double the normal amount of contribution from volunteers.

I have 108 validations pending, mostly SixTrack. But I am glad I have contributed to Science. Unfortunately, only SixTrack and Atlas@home VBox work on my PCs. I have enlisted one Windows 8.1 PC in Science United, according to the wishes of Dave Anderson, but I am getting only MilkyWay and Asteroids tasks, both CPU and GPU. Science United credits me with 22 LHC tasks which I never saw running on that PC.
