I am running Atlas"home on 8 cores, 16 GB RAM, VBox 6.04. All theory tasks fail miserably, I don't know why, and I abort them.OS is Windows 10, 1803 version, CPU Ryzen 5 1400.

<max_ncpus>2.000000</max_ncpus>

This tag is not allowed in app_config.xml and will be ignored by the client.
To activate an app_config.xml "read config files" has to be run.
And this is also important:
"If you remove app_config.xml, or one of its entries, you must reset the project in order to restore the proper values."

See:
https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/client_configuration#Project-level_configuration

Hence to configure simple setups it may be easier to set #cores and #tasks at the web preferences page:
https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/prefs.php?subset=project

computezrmie, do you really have to reset the project? I have been just setting no new tasks, waiting for everything to be returned, exiting the boinc client, editing the app_config.xml and then restarting the client.

Changed values overwrite the settings in client_state.xml when you reload the config files and become active when a task starts for the first time.
Tasks that are already in a slot keep the previous settings.

But what value should the client use if you delete app_config.xml or just a tag from it?
Some, but not all, may be set by the project server via scheduler_reply.
Hence the BOINC documentation requests a project reset.

I just updated, no communicated to boinc yet.

Where should I place such app_config.xml? in

D:\boinc2\projects\lhcathome.cern.ch_lhcathome ?

There is no subfolfer for each project there...

Thx¡

Javi

It should be placed in ...\projects\lhcathome.cern.ch_lhcathome. If that happens to be in D:\boinc2\ then yes it should be placed in D:\boinc2\projects\lhcathome.cern.ch_lhcathome

You can click on a user name in the forum and they, if the user don't have the computer hidden, click on the VIEW link to see that users computer(s).
You then have links to the computers TASKS and DETAILS on that page.
Was there someone specific you are asking?

...Remember ATLAS was not initially developed for BOINC. It was developed for a vast network of many thousands of non-BOINC hosts on CERN's own non-BOINC distributed computing network. BOINC is just an after thought, a mere add on attached to their DC network with bits of glue and twine. BOINC delivers up only a few hundreds of hosts that together return a miniscule amount of work compared to CERN's own DC network. While they certainly appreciate our contributions there is a limit on how much effort they should invest in keeping less capable BOINC hosts happy.

Although from this table, https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/atlas_job.php Boinc is not an insignificant contributor to the overall ATLAS effort. :)

Just to give you some numbers, since I had to do this for a recent management report, in 2018 all the ATLAS data centres around the world combined simulated around 10 billion events, and the contribution from BOINC was 748 million events. So this contribution of 7.5% of all ATLAS simulation is far from minuscule. Some of this is of course from BOINC running on dedicated data centre clusters but the contribution from "regular" volunteers is not insignificant. On the graph linked above BOINC is usually in the top 5 sites for number of running jobs and it is considered in general by ATLAS to be a highly useful resource.

Thanks for those numbers, David, as they are not easy to derive from the multitude of look alike colors on the graph.

And now...

https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/result.php?resultid=221211240

What is this ?

Failing after more than 10H of CPU?

Tired of this...I would rather put my efforts somewhere else.
