Hi there. New at this, but whenever I run a project from the LHC I keep getting a message on the app that says waiting for memory and it never moves. I've checked my computer performance and nothing is running to take up any huge bytes of memory but I have to abort the program and move on to a different project. I have the right programs installed, I believe. Thanks for the help !!! Have a great week everybody !!! |

Hi Thunderstixx, You may compare the project requirements (esp. ATLAS) with your computer's resources. ATLAS (as currently set up): 4 cores, 6.4 GB RAM your computer: 4 cores, 8 GB RAM Thus your computer will not have much CPU/RAM to run the OS + BOINC client + BOINC vboxwrapper + VirtualBox beside the ATLAS VM. You may consider to reduce it to a 2-core setup (+ 4800 MB RAM via app_config.xml) or a 3-core setup. In addition you may raise the max RAM % your BOINC client is allowed to use. See your BOINC manager menu. |

Ummmm.... Sorry, but I have almost no idea what you just said, I did understand the max RAM % and can probably get that one done. But, I am running some other programs instead and abort the waiting for memory runs. I hope that's OK. I'm 62 and have a bit of computer knowledge, but I am not a programmer by any stretch of the imagination. BUT, My neighbor is and I am working out a trade with him to do a couple other things with my old unit. So I think I'll show him this. I can also run my old computer and install BOINC to that one and run it full time. It should be big enough to run it. Thanks for your help. I am glad I can help. I always wanted to be a Rocket Scientist like every other young boy that watched the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo programs and waltzing on the Moon. Also remember Challenger and Columbia... Ad Astra, Per Aspera..... Thank you very much for the prompt answer... Now if I can grow another brain I might be able to figger it out... |

Well, sorry from my side. My explanation may have been too cryptic. Let's try it this way: 1. Your computer has limited resources, especially the total amount of RAM 2. LHC@home offers different subprojects (SixTrack, ATLAS, CMS, LHCb, Theory) 3. The subprojects have different resource requirements 4. Beside SixTrack (lowest req.) you tried to run ATLAS (highest req.) 5. ATLAS failed because your BOINC client was not configured to use enough RAM *) 6. You may navigate to the project's web preferency page and deselect all subprojects but SixTrack and Theory https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/prefs.php?subset=project 7. Once you are more familiar with the complex BOINC setup you may try other subprojects *) Your computer may be able to run ATLAS, but for the moment it seems to be better if you make some experience with the easiest subprojects. |
