Message 34310 - Posted: 8 Feb 2018, 11:49:35 UTC

Every time I attempt to run a Theory Simulation the job fails with the VM Heartbeat missing - SixTrack finishes OK . I've updated VirtualBox and Bonic was only installed 2 days ago.

Is there something else I need to do?

Sorry if this is a very simplistic error, but when I've used Bonic (without VirtualBox) on other projects it's just worked and I'm many years away from being up-to-date with computing :)

Cheers,
Deborah

It looks like you do not have Hardware acceleration enabled so the VM is failing to boot.

Hardware acceleration CPU extensions not detected. Disabling VirtualBox hardware acceleration support.

Take a look at Yeti's checklist.

I'm sorry to contradict.
Although Deborah's CPU should be 64bit capable, it runs on 32bit (Windows, VirtualBox, Theory app).
This is not an error by default but the message "Hardware acceleration CPU extensions not detected." is just an info at that point and not the reason for the faulty tasks.

Depending on the overall load on the computer the problem may be the small amount of RAM but it could also be a bug in the 32bit Theory app.

Would it be better if I uninstalled everything and re-installed Bonic without VirtualBox (at least until I get a new computer :D )?

I'm sure that the CERN team put more RAM into their database server these days to ONLY satisfy your new supercomputer.
;-D

To be serious:
If you already plan to by a new computer in the (near) future, it would be overkill to enable the old one for CERN's VirtualBox apps.
You may just set the project prefs to run only sixtrack until then.

Have done :D Thank you for your help, as I was just about to uninstall everything and drop out.

I stand corrected computezrmle. If hardware acceleration is disabled it can fall back to the 32bit flavour, which in this case may be helpful due to the small amount of RAM. It may be possible to run one Theory tasks but as has already been said, if not stick to Sixtrack for now. From looking at the logs there is a sequence of VM pausing and running between booting and failing. My guess is that the computer is struggling and it exceeds the computing usage limits. If you set your computing preferences to only use 50% of the CPUs but 100% CPU time and 90% Memory, it may work.

This is from the first message posted in the VM Applications Errors thread. The sentence highlighted in red could be your problem, especially if you are using Win 10.

EXIT_ABORTED_BY_CLIENT (194)
This exit status is caused when the VM heartbeat is not detected. This mainly occurs when the VM fails to boot. First try a project reset and the try re-installing a recent version of VirtualBox. It can also occur when hardware virtualization is not enabled in the BIOS.

Your main problems are that you have the X86 version of Windows 10 instead of the X64 which means you also will not have enough Ram aka Memory to do the VB tasks so you will have to just try the SixTrack tasks as long as they still have the X86 version.

https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/show_host_detail.php?hostid=10524569

I have ran Sixtrack X86 version but the last ones I ran Valids were last month (January 21st)

Since you only have 2 cores with that Ram problem just try getting the Sixtracks when we have some.

You won't be able to run any VB tasks with only < 3GB ram

The only thing you can do is install the X64 version of Windows 10 so you can use more Ram by just installing another 8GB memory

But then for the same price you can probably just buy a new 8-core pc with Windows 10 X64 with 8GB ram or better.

Last weeks there were some failures, because of Server/Condor problems.

Although all my machines are 64-bit, I can confirm that Theory should run also on a 32-bit system, as long as the memory is not used up by other processes.
From what I noticed, a Theory task needs about 0.9 - 1.0 GB RAM.

I'm also having problems getting the Theory app to run on either of the machines I run LHC on - two different machines,
both with Boinc 7.6.33 and VirtualBox 5.0.18 installed and running. Both should have more than enough RAM 12Gb on one,
(A12) and 8 Gb on the other (A10). Is there a known problem getting this app to run on AMD CPU chips? Do I need to upgrade to
a BOINC 7.8 and the associated VirtualBox?

Theory ran very well on my Ryzen 1700 in a test a few months ago (Lubuntu 17.10.1). I think it was a little faster than my i7-4790, but I did not do it long term comparison.

Over the years I have been running thousands of these tasks Alpha,Beta, and here and on X86 and X64 with AMD and Intel with XP Pro,Win7,Win8.1 and Win 10

The VB tasks work on all of them.

BUT when you have less than 3 GB of Ram on an old X86 you can not run 2 Theory tasks at a time and expect less than 3GB ram to run the tasks and the OS and at the same time just try to look around here or check your emails or look around the web and expect these to not crash.

I doubt a person with just this one type of computer would be just running Theory tasks and not trying to use the pc to do the basics.

I started running my old 3-core with the X86 that has 4GB ram using XP Pro just to once again watch it work.

At first I tried to run all 3 cores since it has 4GB ram AND I never use the pc to do anything else......not even look at this website.

Running 3 tasks at the same time it ran for an hour and froze up and tried to run the next 3 tasks and did the same thing.

So I just set the Boinc Manager to only use 70% of the processor so it would only run 2 Theory tasks at a time and you can see it runs Valid tasks 24/7 that way but will not run 3 tasks because of the less than 4 GB to be used since the OS and everything that runs at the same time will not allow that as you can see by checking your Task Manager as they are running. (it is also a AMD Phenom II) so it is not an AMD problem.

https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/results.php?hostid=10447575

And if you check the op who asked about this you can see she tried to use that 2-core pc with less than 3GB ram to run 2 Theory tasks at the same time and both times they crashed.

Now sure it probably could run ONE Theory task but not 2 at the same time. (and also not using that same pc to surf the web and play youtube videos at the same time )

to be honest: I do with 2 of my computers - an old netbook, Win7 32-bit; an old notebook, Vista 32-bit. Both machines have 3 GB RAM (from which only 2.75GB can be used) - and on each of these computers I run 1 Theory task ea. And nothing else (besides the Antivirus tool, MemInfo, DU Meter, and the Windows Task Manager).
And it works well (with only a few exceptions once in a while).

Which is exactly what I am saying.

On these old beasts you can run a single Theory task but don't try running 2 unless you have the X86 max of 4GB ram

X86 (32 bit) will not *see* more than 4GB of ram no matter how much you plug in.

So as I mentioned my X86 with 4GB or ram will run 2 Theory tasks at a time since I never use it to do anything else.
And it sounded like *Deborah* only had this one computer and it shows in her account that she tried twice to run 2 tasks at a time and they crashed but she can run the Sixtracks so she seems to have just did that.

Of course members like *us* know what we can get away with when we have several computers in our collections and we like to run them untill they give up and die (usually the CPU or the HD)

And Erich you have probably tested your older beasts just to see what they will do.
I have tried CMS on my old X86 but it was just trouble with that <4GB ram so since I am anti-Invalid computer error tasks I only run those on my newer pc's with 16-24 GB ram and 8-cores.

We have always (since we started running VB 7 years ago) had new members wanting to try VB for the first time on old 2-core X86 with 2.something ram and find out they should just stick to Sixtrack.......or of course shop around for a modern pc

(I sure have done plenty of that in my 14+ years doing this)

Yes, boinc.berkeley.edu Boinc 7.8.3 and Virtualbox 5.1.26 is there for download!

Doesn't reply to the question:
Do I need to upgrade to 7.8.3? (I.E. is there something in 7.6.33 [or VB 5.0...] that causes this app to "compute error" after about 2 minutes of runtime?...)

I am running 7.6.33 but I have updated the VB manually to 5.1.22, this combination works without problems. I don't remember what made me update the VB.
