Hello,

I wanted do do some LHC crunching again but when I request new work I get the message: VirtualBox is not installed.

Does this mean that I can now only crunch for LHC when I install BOINC with Virtual Box?

Your pc is hidden in your profile so I don't know exactly what to tell you.

But the reason it says that is that you have the preferences still set to get the new VB tasks here instead of the old Sixtrack tasks that you are probably used to so go there and change the settings.

Now if you do need help running the new VB tasks you will have to let me see what pc you are running or post what you have as far as OS and Ram and if it is an X64

To answer your question: No. You don't need the VirtualBox if you just want to run the old LHC tasks (sixtrack application).

The VirtualBox is required if you want to run the new applications (Theory Simulation, CMS Simulation, LHCb Simulation, ATLAS Simulation and ALICE Simulation). These new applications are being integrated to the LHC@home project as they used to be separate projects (I think that the separate projects are still going on).

Note that the sixtrack application will have work only intermittently (same as before) but the VirtualBox applications should have work constantly available after they have ironed out all the wrinkles for the new setup. You can see which application has work available from the Server Status page (link is on the left).

It isn't that you changed your preferences but that the LHC set them to have NO limit as far as tasks unless you reset that and that you will get told by the server that you do not have the VB installed because it thinks you want VB tasks.

And since you do not want them you have to reset your preferences.

Another thing you may need is to change from the previous LHC 1.0 to the new LHC

If you still have LHC 1.0 go to your Boinc Manager and *Remove* this project and then go to the Boinc Manager *Tools* and add new project where you will see the current version of LHC.

Preferences are different with the new version too.

LHC 1.0 you have to look at the top of the page where it says *switch* to the page that shows you all those settings

I have just tested and can confirm what you are experiencing. It should be possible to run sixtrack without installing VirtualBox. That check should not be running.

When requesting SixTrack tasks, you will only get this VirtualBox message if there are no SixTrack-jobs available due to queue empty or too busy.

The message can be ignored.

I can confirm CPs reply. We will still try to stop it displaying that message when there are no tasks.

If you also wish to run other applications and opt in for these in the BOINC preferences, you will need VirtualBox.

We have tried to get rid of the message from the server, but so far without success. Investigations are continuing with the BOINC developers.

Even if you do not allow other applications than Sixtrack in your BOINC preferences, the BOINC scheduler issues the message "Virtual Box is not installed" from time to time.

If you are happy to crunch Sixtrack and classic BOINC only, you may safely ignore this message.

Is there a how to section on adding virtual box on Linux pc's for newbie's? I am running Ubuntu 14.04 and in the Synaptic installer there is no virtual box for Boinc listed. It comes with Boinc on some of the Windows installers.

The link example above uses old extension. If you download the latest vbox change example accordingly. Then it works.

I personally am going to remove the Vbox application and stop crunching any of those WU's. They are crashing my very adequate PC and fouling up my Video card settings.
The same goes for Atlas, but it locks up my system no matter what I have done to my settings.

If this were a business software, I would already have legal action pending!

Let's crunch for our future.

I have found the Atlas tasks to be too resource-heavy for my machines so have deselected them in Project Preferences to limit them to just doing the much lighter Theory tasks. You could try that then perhaps add other applications individually to see which ones agree with your systems.

That figure is not a "live" number so even though the page says there are Sixtrack jobs available, they may have already been snapped up or they may be allocated to a different OS from yours (with your computer(s) being hidden I don't know which that is).
