As part of consolidation of LHC@home, we have setup a new server web front end using SSL for this project. The new URL is:

https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome

Please feel free to connect to the new site at your convenience. (BOINC 7.2 clients and later supports SSL.)

The old LHC@home classic site will continue operation as long as required. Currently there are no new Sixtrack tasks in the queue, but soon more applications and work will be available from this project.

Okay, here are my questions to this consolidation:

  1. Are https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/ and http://lhcathomeclassic.cern.ch/sixtrack/index.php are really the same project ?

I got a PM, but this was only shown on one project

  2. Should we redirect the normal Sixtrack-Project-Clients to this new URL ?

I did not make good experiences with URL-Changes of projects in the past, so I would prefer to de-Attach und Re-Attach my clients

  3. Are both URL spotting out work at the moment ?

  4. Could we already make the change on the clients or better stay untouch until you tell us to switch

  5. Regarding message-boards: At Atlas Forum we are used to see threads, that we already get noticed about new tasks, in green background instead in gray / white. Could you add this here please.

Yes, it is the same project, with the same DB back-end. Tasks and credit as well as messages all go into the same place. The SSL project runs a later BOINC version, though.

2. If you have a recent (7.2 or later) BOINC client, yes, please detach and re-attach to the project at some convenient time. (This is what I have done with my Linux client.)

3 and 4, see above.

5. Thanks for the feedback, we'll work to improve the layout.

Thanks again for all your contributions to LHC@home projects!

To make it easier to recognize if a workstation is attached to new or old URL, you could name the Project at the New URL:

LHC@home 2.0

I just had a computer failure on an old laptop that I used on this project! I've gotten a new one and an in the process of attaching to this project and it just will not happen!!!I thought maybe I was doing something wrong , so I decided to try another project that I also ran on the old comp. So i tried to install Seti and BANG it loaded and is running. Now I did both installs as an existing user. Seti loaded and showed up on the progran desk top LHC said it loaded but never shows up on the desktop. Whats up with that? Pick

If your BOINC client is older than 7.2, it will fail to handle secure communication with the new server on: https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/

In that case, please either upgrade your BOINC client installation or continue to use the old URL: http://lhcathomeclassic.cern.ch/sixtrack/

The RSS feed on the new site is broken.

See the W3C feed validator here: https://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=https%3A%2F%2Flhcathome.cern.ch%2Fsixtrack%2Frss_main.php

The W3C validator still says the feed doesn't validate, but the report has changed from yesterday.

In practice, the feed is now working with my reader. Thanks.

What is meant by "consolidation"? Are you going to merge the other LHC projects like ATLAS and Beauty with SixTrack?

App updates are already being tested over at https://lhcathome.cern.ch/vLHCathome-dev for ATLAS, CMS and Beauty, now LHCb.
Some testing has already been done with a Linux version of Sixtrack.
When it is felt these are ready to be released into the wild, they are moved to the production site https://lhcathome2.cern.ch/vLHCathome/

I believe the goal is to amalgamate all the sub-projects into one portal (probably keeping -dev as a testing-only site).
Can't be certain, but I would expect all historical credits earned on the sub-projects would also transfer to the eventual umbrella site.
No idea of expected timescale.

This being one of my earliest projects, it would be sad to see it lose its independence but it makes sense to reduce the amount of duplicated effort, allowing the scientists to concentrate on the day job.

I think it would make sense to have them all under one roof, like WCG or the Citizen Science Grid. I would be happy to help CERN/LHC's other BOINC endeavors, but really don't want to add "another" project. You'd probably gain a few additional users as well, ones like me who don't have accounts at all the projects already.

Indeed we will enable gradually the applications from our other BOINC projects to the original LHC@home. Initially these VM apps will be beta only. Sixtrack will remain the default app for all registered users.

Those of you who wish to also run our other applications, will later be able to opt in via your BOINC preferences.

The whole process will take some time, as we do things step by step when we have some time, and do not wish to break the chain of running simulations. We also aim to ensure that accumulated credit is kept.

We will keep you posted when new applications become active on this project.

Thanks for your contributions to LHC@home and keep on crunching!

Okay, I see, that you are preparing the applications from Atlas and other.

How can I in future set up, that I want to crunch Projects in following order:

First: Atlas

If Atlas doesn't have work:

Backup1: CMS

If CMS doesn't have work:

Backup2: LHCb

and so on

Do we need virtualbox for running LHC tasts? I know that some of the other programs need virtualbox in their current projekts (e.g. ATLAS).

Sixtrack doesn't need VirtualBox... If you look at the applications page, the VirtualBox applications have (vbox64) noted on the end of the version.

I would like that LHC provides a project preference to opt out of the applications which need virtual box to run. Even better if you could provide selection for all different applications. This could eliminate the Boinc notice that you don't have VirtualBox installed if work is available just for those applications (like now for Theory Simulation).

When I access the web site using Ubuntu/Firefox, I can see options to let me select applications that I want to run, number of tasks to download at one time and number of tasks to run at one time for each profile.

When I access the web site using Windows 10, I do not see any of those options.

When I access the web site using Windows 10 and use the https:// address, the browser shows a Security Certificate Error.

I can see the application selection when I go to the https: site but not on the old lhcathomeclassic.cern.ch site (I am still using the old project url). The only application I have selected in https-site is SixTrack so I shouldn't be getting the notice that I don't have VirtualBox installed. This notification only makes sense if I had selected to run any application that requires VirtualBox but were still missing the it.

Ah, now I can see the options in Windows. I was taking the old link and putting https in front of it. That gets a security certificate error. The https web site has a different address. When I linked from BOINC, it worked. I have updated my favorite link to the new address.
