No one else has said it ... and I have just checked back in (I have been in forget it mode) ... but thanks for the new tasks ... I just wish there were more ... :) Sadly for me, this is my \"ideal\" project and I wish I could be running work full time ... alas alack ... Anyway, you have my thanks if no one else\'s ... |

Yups, thanks for the work. For me this is one of the best projects to work for because of the obvious value of the work we are doing here. I have to make a remark tough, and I know I\'m not the first person to complain about this. But I think it\'s a waste of capacity to distribute workunits with an initial replication of 5. The reason is obvious: there are consistently 2 of the 5 computers crunching with no scientific value at all. You could argue that you get results back faster this way but that argument is invalid because this can be done by creating workunits with a shorter deadline. Shorter deadlines and a replication of maximum 3 certainly are the way to go if there are a lot of workunits to be crunched, you don\'t want 3/5th of your capacity doing useless work if there is still a very big backlog of work that can\'t be started because too many hosts are working on tasks that are of no value at all. After all the discussions and arguments about this specific topic I still don\'t understand why this very interesting project still uses that very wasteful initial replication of 5. After all the discussions and arguments about this specific topic I still don't understand why this very interesting project still uses that very wasteful initial replication of 5. I also appreciate the work over the holiday period. The eight I finished were all credited. However something has changed here. I noticed that out of the eight for which I received credit, 6 of'em gave credit to all 5 iterations of the work units, 1 gave credit to four of the iterations due to client error, and one work unit is still being processed by the last computer in the group. If anyone noticed differently, please speak up. One example is http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/workunit.php?wuid=3300541 I would suggest that someone is either sending out practice units or there has been a change to the protocol. Just my two pence. |

Doesn't sound anything wrong with that. The quorum is 3. Once that's met credits are granted. Any tasks for the WU that have already started to be crunched by PCs will still be credited otherwise they'll be cancelled. In the case of the one with 4 WUs receiving credit, obviously the one with the error won't get any but as the other 4 completed then they do. The WUs are only cancelled by the server if they haven't started crunching on the PC www.chris-kent.co.uk aka Chief.com |

Doesn't sound anything wrong with that. Ahhhh! Then a workaround would be to manually stop each work unit in a batch after a few seconds of work to ensure that it is considered as being crunched? Maybe hard for those with large numbers of puters spread about here and there, but fairly easy if one has only a few machines in a central location- and time to devote to their labor of love. LOL! |

Doesn\'t sound anything wrong with that. It\'s only worth doing that if you care about how many credits you have. There\'s no point in doing that cause you\'d only be wasting CPU cycles on WUs that already have a valid results. You\'d be better off letting other projects use those CPU cycles. www.chris-kent.co.uk aka Chief.com |

It's only worth doing that if you care about how many credits you have. Then a purist would follow each work unit and when the quorum was reached, manually abort the work unit in progress. Kind of begs the question of why point credit is even given then. And why there are complaints about old pending credits even. I'm only running three projects on 2 computers at present. The computers are running 24/7. I check the BOINC manager on both on a daily basis and whether I've reached a quorum on an irregular basis; and only at this site. Hopefully progress has been made in each project. I devoted the 'puters to work on projects that I feel passionate about, and maintaining a credit position in a group is for fun. Also, perhaps, a measure of my devotion to the furtherance of the science in each project. Others probably feel the same. I'm not Dagorath so won't go on ad infinitum on the subject. Suffice to say that others probably feel the same as I. |

Yea - not only did I get my CUDA xmass gift, but I got a WU from this project. Only thing missing is a SixPack to go with the SixTrack! |

Yea - not only did I get my CUDA What card did you get? I have been running a 9800GT and a GTX280 ... the latter is more fun ... I am sore tempted to order a GTX295 for grins and giggles ... but have been resisting the temptation for the moment ... of course I could succumb at any minute ... :) |

Yea - not only did I get my CUDA Hi Paul! I recently bought a gtx280. We have several of the 260 where I work as our division has been looking at useing this technology and I thought I might do something on my own. I recall the 2xx are not limited to single precision floats. |

Great minds think alike ... :) I am pretty well pleased with the speed of the 280 card though the real tests will come when we have several projects that are issuing GPU tasks. GPU Grid still makes too big a hit on the CPU to support the running GPU so I am in no hurry to run out to get more GPUs going. Not that I don\'t want to do work for them, but not at the cost of not being able to do as much work for CPU intense projects. Their new version is in the works and when it comes out and seems to be stable and if it reduces the load on the windows machines enough I might just get a 1K PSU that can support 3 GPUs and, sadly, one GTX 295 ... add that to the i7 box until I can afford another 295 card ... that would put the 280 and 2 each 295 cards in the box ... Mid summer I hope I can afford a dual i7 (and if they have it out by then) and that system will also be built on a MB that can support 3 GPUs and I will start to add the second and third after the fact (though I may START with two cards of 295 or better) ... WOn\'t that be fun ... :) Happy computing ... |

Wow, way to threadjack. Besides, has there been any input on that matter from someone who can actually make a difference, or just squabbling between users? Seems like a lot of time and energy has been spent on the discussion, but little has actually come of it. I think the line between trying to make the project run better and just arguing to make your point was crossed long ago. Can we take a time-out on that for a while? And, in response to the topic at hand, there\'s really no way for us to tell when new work is on the way. It just comes when it does, so don\'t make this your only BOINC project. Yep - Noderaser has the right idea. All of my machines have several projects in rotation, and poll LHC as they get to it in turn. If I've lived this long, I've gotta be that old |

Yep - Noderaser has the right idea. All of my machines have several projects in rotation, and poll LHC as they get to it in turn. I really like this project and just leave it open all the time to catch what work comes along, as for waisting energy, well sure my computer is always on anyway. Keep up the good work LHC ! |
