So that they have a fighting chance of getting a job to process we changed some of the settings including the daily quota.

2 workunits per day? I want the drugs you're taking.

For those who missed it:

We will change things back to normal over the first few days next week...

It's just a few days. If this were a permanent change, then yes, it would be a total disaster. But it sounds like next week we'll be able to get a lot more to crunch. So a nice weekend to all and see you at the WU feeding line in a few days! Cheers.

Hi,
We are releasing a Press Release today to officially Launch the LHC@HOME move to the UK. So we might expect some new users to turn up over the weekend! Please be nice to them ;-)

So that they have a fighting chance of getting a job to process we changed some of the settings including the daily quota.

I think thats a very good idea. To have 2 WU a day is more comfortable for me than getting 10 at once and then no more for 6 months.
Currently there is computing power needed at SIMAP: http://boinc.bio.wzw.tum.de/boincsimap/

as well as FightAIDS@home:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/viewFaahResearch.do

and Einstein@Home:
http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/

So who has idle machines could be very useful contributing to these projects.
Hope this helps

2 per day would'nt be quite so bad if they were a few hours long but 15-20 min is starting to whack out my long term debt again(had to suspend LHC on most machines with debt being so high and no work for months it was keeping my cache of work for other projects artificially low)

I completely agree with you ( JRenkar ), 2 WU/day is *a little small*......

but the *good thing* is , that there is work !!!!

If we've done 12,444 in 6 hours it will only take us three days to crunch what's available at the moment...

Perhaps Alex and Neasan are trying to make a determination as to what a fair quota might be for whatever size batch they are going to give us...

That's the number out there still being crunched we've only had just over a hundred returned by users if you look on the Server Status page.

Server-hammerers please note: it won't do you any good as there is also a minimum time between download requests.

I don't know whose idea that was but it was a damn good one.

NO! It shows

Results ready to send 16,800

Yes, it says that *now*. At the time I posted this message, there were 0 results ready to send. The 16k were added a day later.

Yes. Today ( Oct 13, 2007 ) shows Up, 52030 workunits to crunch and when I hit the update I still do not get a download.

Whats up with this?

Read the whole thread, and have a look at your Messages tab. If you don't wait an hour between updates, you won't get anything. Don't click the update button manually.

What I don't understand is: when clicking on update and their is WU's available and I don't get any. Now why is that?

Personally, I'm pretty tired of waiting so long for WU's, then being limited to 4 a day. If they want to make sure that all the newbies get WU's, that's fine. They'll just have to find one more newbie to replace me.

You make a good point, that is to not announce the press release until there is plenty of work for everybody (old timers and newbies ;).

The press release would tend to imply that there is more work on the horizon. The only problem is going to be if they do not deliver this work, then whatever "goodwill" that was purchased by having a few WUs available to work on will be burned up...

Personally, 2/day was ridiculously low anyway. The longest that I've seen any of my quorum partners take is just a bit under an hour, so for most modern systems, 20-30/day is well within the realm of possibility. If they want to attract and retain new folks, they need to provide at least 4 hours of work / day, IMO. This would seem to need a quota of 8 or 10. Double that for 8 hours of work, so 16-20/day.

It all boils down to whether or not they actually can provide a constant stream of work. If not, then there really was no benefit to drumming up support via new users...as it will only exasperate everyone, old and new...

IMO, YMMV, etc, etc, etc...
