BOINC's Future With CERN?

With CERN poised to finish its upgrades and begin operations in 2008, are there any plans to use BOINC to assist with the processing of the vast quantities of data that will be generated? Just curious. Thanks! :) Regards, Bob P. |

Maybe, porting LHC software isn't easy but we are looking into That's another question entirely remember the LHC has been put back and six track could be still useful during the test runs at the start, we are looking at alternative applications at the moment so hopefully when six track does finish we'll have other things already in place. |

I watched a "home spun" video documentary on CERN (which was done by one of you LHC@home participants, I think) and there was a section about the CERN grid. I was wondering if any portion of the CERN grid has been ported to a non-BOINC distributed computing project that could be crunched "at home"? I was wondering if any portion of the CERN grid has been ported to a non-BOINC distributed computing project that could be crunched "at home"? Ah the Grid, my actual job. BOINC and the Grid look very similar looking from the outside in i.e. distributed computing, heterogeneous resources etc etc but they are different and this means it is unlikely that a machine running BOINC will ever become a Grid node. By a Grid node I mean that when a job is sent out by a scientist to the Grid a location for running and executing the job is chosen and that machine would be a node on the Grid. However it is hoped that the some of the software that LHC experiments use in various calculations may be ported over to BOINC so that real LHC crunching may be done by LHC@home. We are working on this but whether or not a BOINC user will find the Higgs is a different story.
