Problem is once again, I would need to be at the client machine to change the remote host file and restart Boinc.

Write a script in shell (linux) or visual basic (win) to copy the file into the directory. Stick it on a floppy / CD, post it across the state with a request to stick the disk in and click on the icon ;-)

My 4400 and the Barton 3200's are all in water cooled Koolance cases.
They all run about 80-85 degrees F. in the house.

if I had that I'd be plumbing it in to the hot water tank, and then would not even need the heat on for hot water!

I wish there was some form of "boinc remote access" so I could manage projects and attach machines to projects remotely. Many of these machines are across town or out of state. Calling up Grandpa and trying to walk him through the process is futile, working the email is the limit of his PC prowess.

I realize your setup will indeed be more complicated than the article describes as it doesn't go into what's necessary to connect to your machines across state. Hint: You'll need to register with a dynamic DNS and installa monitoring client amongst other things. Good Luck. It's not impossible if you have the right information.

One way you can possibly get him attached via email is to attach a copy of the account*.xml file to the email and tell him to save it to the BOINC directory. The next time he starts up the computer BOINC will attach to the project.

Oh my... My farm has never grown bigger than two *sad* For a short while the two consisted of an AMD 486sx 40MHz and an Intel P100 *lol* That was back in end 1999 to beginning of 2000. And then I when back to one again - a P233 first, then an Athlon 1600+. The Athlon is still going, although only on about 25% of the time. So you could say my farm currently consist of 1.25 PC's *lol* - the 1 is my Athlon 3200+

I do have plans for when I get more space and money.

How bad is your boinc farm???

AMD 2400+ (1.8Ghz) - laptop that overheats just on iTunes
P3 500Mhz
P2 266Mhz
P1 133Mhz (takes 50h per SETI wu)

Thats not to mention I've got my girlfriend using it on her laptop (1.5Ghz).

Ahh... when my AMD X2 4400+ arrives.... then the crunching begins!

The local council here collects old computers from businesses and schools and stuff, and uses them to teach IT Engineers how to fix them and stuff, then sells them on really cheaply to local projects (or donates). I'm hoping to get some of them for BOINC@Hull. I'm not sure what systems they may give - anything from 100Mhz to 1Ghz I think.

I've solved this by going over to command-line Linux for all but four of my own boxes. I use a four port KVM to talk to the windowses, and Putty to ssh into the Linux boxes. (Do a google for Putty, it is by far the best telnet/ssh client to use when you want to do Unix command line from a Windows box)

But then I'm a sad old Unix hacker who can't see the point of spoiling a nice version of Unix with a GUI...

With remote desktop you could control all your win boxes from any one of them, but if you do this please make sure that nobody from outside your firewall can get into them...

If you are happy to use just one box for your everyday computing, and have all the others as BOINC-only, then perhaps the easiest thing to do is to set all the boxes up to load BOINC automatically on re-boot, set the BIOSes to accept bootup without a keyboard, and then just use the BOINC remote facility to control all your clients, as we discussed earlier this thread.

RealVNC also works ... it is what I use for my remote windows machines. As I understand it they have OS-X and Linux clients too ...

Borandi, if your "main" machine is running Windows, you really should have a look at BoincView
it may take a couple of minutes to set up, but it makes the thing a lot easier when you're running multiple "drones" on a network.

Haha I just set it up, then came here and I find this post! BoincView is great - now I dont have to keep switching the monitor between units and keep clicking upload. Fantastic!

Chrulle, I'm running a Pentium M as desribed above in my laptop. I like it very much, but for a workstations I would always prefer a processor with HT or better dualcore ...

Nope, it's my T42p IBM-Notebook. But I'm thinking about getting one too for a desktop. I like the new AOpen cases, that look like a Mac Mini.
