The longggg reason: - Note: I do not have huge wu's like climateprediction in mind during the following. 1) I have more than LHC project as there is not always work. Fine. 2) I have it set to connect every 0.1 days so that I can cut and run any time without leaving a bunch of undone wu's lying around and annoying others.(And realistically, what others think of us matters in this world. However small or pointless, if it's negative, it can hurt ya.) Nowadays I prefer to do LHC. I have Einstein at a low priority so it takes closer to a week to finish; and that means more chance of loss during a cut-and-run. The fact that the win98 machine holds enough work for each project for 0.1 days makes things worse.(I just helped that problem a bit with a setting of 0.01 days.) I still usually have a wu for each of 4 projects in system. - with a setting of LHC 97% and the other 3 at 1% or less, the 3 could take a long time to complete and would eventually be forced to run due to deadlines; and hopefully boinc will calculate that all 3 1%'ers will have to make their individual deadlines. So, how about: Priority LHC: 1 Seti: 2 Predictor: 3 Einstein: 4 AND instead of switch every Hour, it is every wu: LHC runs out? then get one from Seti. (crunch till done, then recheck LHC.) Seti down? then get one from Predictor. (...same as above here) Predictor unpredictable? check Einstein. (...) For dial-uppers, leave the percentage option. ----------------------- Click to see my tag My tag SNAFU'ed? Turn the Page! :D |

Ofcourse, the 'connect every x days' would be for: a) only priority 1, or b) the active project c) a different setting for each priority. ----------------------- Click to see my tag My tag SNAFU'ed? Turn the Page! :D |

This sounds a lot like BOINC 3... Gaspode the UnDressed http://www.littlevale.co.uk |

Hmmm. About the switch every hour thing. How about if you simply change the value in your preferences to switch longer than 60 minutes? If it takes, say, 10 hours to complete a workunit, why not set it to "switch every 12 hours"? Then it would crunch an entire workunit before checking whether it's time to switch. Would it work? |

Good point, I shall try that for that part. - the percentages should take care of the rest, right? yeah, it must. :) -- meaning switching will take place sooner if percentages dictate so, although they do say: Switch between applications every (recommended: 60 minutes) ............ recommended. hmmmmmm. About the main part(first part), I think that sites would have a better idea of where they are at any given time; and so would I. ;) - addit: meaning, there would be less wu's floating around out there on computers that are not strictly crunchers. ----------------------- Click to see my tag My tag SNAFU'ed? When I found out about BOINC and installed it, I was actually quite surprised that it doesn't work like that. I found the percentage system quite annoying, but later got used to it. The priority system i something I would really love to see in BOINC |

MikeW made an excellent observation. Boinc 5 doesn't need to be configured like that. ![]() |

You can realize this with actual client by this way: Use the resource-share and give it: a very high share for LHC a mid-share for your second favorite project a small share for the third and deeper projects I have configured my clients as following: 45% LHC 45% Rosetta 1% each other project To make it easier, I have used high values for the resource share, like 45000 for LHC ... As LHC doesn't have work all the time, the box will focus on Rosetta until LHC has work again; then the long-term-debt of LHC will focus on LHC when LHC has work. And, if both projects have no work, the client will pickup some work from the other projects. Okay, if ALL projects have work, a max of 10% goes to the only backup projects, but I can live with this ![]() Supporting BOINC, a great concept ! |

You need to be running one of the more recent BOINC core clients for this to work. If you are running a pre LTD/panic mode client, setting tiny resource shares to projects will simply have them run out of time. Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream. |

I have mine set to switch every 4 hours I orignally changed it as Rosetta was having problems back in the beginning and altering my settings stopped it from erroring out. They have fixed that problem now but I have get my settings the same as I didnt like a switch every 60mins it made it look like nothing was happening at all. my 4hrs makes it a bit more visable to me what is getting done as opposed to every 60mins. The only time it doesn't switch is when I'm over commited and it switches to the WU's which are the nearest to the closing date. I don't know what you said different, but that's what I'm going to do. Change every 24 hours may be a bit extreme. If you have a result that is due 25 hours from now, and it has 2 hours of CPU remaining, and some other project gets picked first, it is going to be late. I would suggest using a number somewhat lower than 24 hours. (Don't make me add this as a check for EDF). ![]() ![]() BOINC WIKI |

Don't know what you mean by: (Don't make me add this as a check for EDF). But I do know that Boinc is smart enough to switch to another project to make sure it gets done on time. The only thing remaining is, if there are 3 deadlines that are close, is Boinc smart enough to get them ALL in on time. :) Oh man, I have to make you think, so many people have thanked me for that.! And I too, meaning me... myself... have thanked others for it. Humans seem to be at their best when 'In the Thick of things'. But I'm not testing anyone or anything, just trying to figure this thing out. No 'normal' person in every day life, except maybe in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, does anyone push you to your limit. Signed: A Bush administration chuckler-at, and supporter-of.
