| Description | Support the legendary Radio Caroline The first offshore Pirate Radio Station of the cooast of the United Kingdom Ronan’s Made a Fellow Some while ago, Caroline’s founder Ronan O'Rahilly was asked to present an award at a Radio Academy event, but declined to do so. Many of us suggested that he should be receiving an award, not presenting one. In early December, Ronan was persuaded, by his and our friend Mike Plumley, to attend a Radio Academy evening as a member of the audience only. However, this was just a ruse to get him there. As the event progressed Ronan, to his horror, was invited on stage to be made a Fellow of the Radio Academy. Ralph Bernard was honourable enough to admit that without Ronan and Radio Caroline, few of the assembled delegates would have found work in the industry. But, he also added that had he seen Ronan 40 years ago it would have been his duty to arrest him, when of course neither Ronan or the radio station actually broke UK law. He and we were just outside of the law. Bernard also committed the unforgivable sin of stating Ronan’s true age, a gaffe that we do not intend to compound here. After the briefest of acceptance speeches Ronan exited the stage and blended back in to the audience. |
