(Message 13642)
Posted 17 May 2006 by Gaspode the UnDressed Post: Same problem here - and for the first time I now seem to have a result assigned to me that I haven't actually received. Every BOINC project has hiccups and problems from time to time. Every other BOINC project has an admin team to look after it and sort it out. As an LHC die hard it pains me to say this, but the project as it stands doesn't inspire confidence. Maybe now is the time to call it a day here and concentrate on other projects. |

Elsewhere in these boards you will find: This idea has been suggested before. There are no admins at present. Even the admins (when there are some) don't know when the work's coming. |

WU's not being recognised by BOINC
(Message 13619)
Posted 14 May 2006 by Gaspode the UnDressed Post: My advice: leave well alone. There are enough complaints about ghost results, orphaned results, usw. without risking adding to the mess by manually fiddling with the client state files. If you have lost the work, that's too bad. The redundancy built into BOINC will see to it that the units are re-issued if necessary. |

O.K., I'm New! No Work??
(Message 13609)
Posted 13 May 2006 by Gaspode the UnDressed Post:
There is a long wait sometimes - sometimes it's only a day or two. Unfortunately there's no rhyme or reason to this. Even the LHC administrators (although there aren't any at present) don't know when there will be work. The work is submitted by a physicist in Canada, through an automated system, so it's sometimes difficult to get a clear idea of when work is available. Meanwhile, do the best thing: crunch something else! Happy crunching! |

Posted 13 May 2006 by Gaspode the UnDressed Post: I think the best thing is to detach and start again. I assume that the Robert Williamson account is not yours. Maybe you should detach, create a new account under a name that has no confusion - RC Williamson, or perhaps, Williamson-the-Destroyer maybe? ;) Make sure the email address you use matches exactly (case sensitive!) the email address you use elesewhere so that your cross-project ID ties up properly. Then reattach with the new account credentials. You'll lose a small amount of credit associated with your defunct account, but hey - you're not getting it anyway! |

The 12 Universal Keys of GOD LAST UPDATE 1.07
(Message 13520)
Posted 6 May 2006 by Gaspode the UnDressed Post: I don't claim to understand what these people are on about. There's no science here nor any facts, other than the rather obvious decimal representations of vulgar fractions. I note that neither of the gentlemen in question have submitted any results, and I also notice that the original posting appeared (albeit briefly) on almost every other BOINC site, and has been removed on almost all of them. If it IS a joke then it has lost everything in the translation. Neither English nor French versions contain any discernible humour. Sorry - I don't speak Arabic. Whatever the motivation for these nonsensical postings they will be treated by me henceforth with the indifference they deserve. |

Plans in the making
(Message 13518)
Posted 6 May 2006 by Gaspode the UnDressed Post: Honored Crunchers, Two reasons why this won't work: It would be impractical to build a machine of sufficent power to make this worthwhile. Secondly, and more importantly, the extremely small size of the particles involved would make it impossible to guarantee a result. Think of the differences in scale between the electromagnets and other hardware required to build the machine, and the size of the particles. You'd be talking of tolerances in billionths of 1%, or smaller. Even in the existing particle beam accelerators most particles just fly straight through the collision points. Collisions are a very rare event, and only happen in reasonable numbers because there are many many many opportunities. |

Request for database cleanup
(Message 13509)
Posted 5 May 2006 by Gaspode the UnDressed Post: This is primarily for the admins of this project but feel free to chime in if you have something to add :) It's unclear whether we have an admin on this project at present. Chrulle has left for pastures new, and no new name has appeared. Ben Segal has overall responsibility for the project, but he's not involved on a day to day basis. Other names I have seen associated with the technical background either haven't been seen for a long time, or have no involvement beyond the application development role, or both. the staff of seti@home have battled with this problem several times Here's the real issue behind some of the maintenance you ask for: it's not easy. Previous requests of this type have been turned down because the solution could introduce more problems than it fixes. It would be nice to think that the downtime could be used to tidy things up, but the reality is that there's no resource available to do it. |

Can you post the last few messages from your stdout file? That should shed some light on why you aren't getting work. It's possible that the amount of time you have your laptop on may not allow it to finish work unit before the deadline. |

Posted 26 Apr 2006 by Gaspode the UnDressed Post: Once the wu are available, how long does it take to finish one on average? Reckon on 3 - 4 hours on a P4 of 2.6GHz or faster. Most WUs are 100,000 turns, but sometimes 1,000,000 turn WUs are issued which take around 10 times as long (oddly!). WUs can also finish very quickly (in seconds or minutes) if the stability of the simulated beam is poor. |

(Message 13460)
Posted 26 Apr 2006 by Gaspode the UnDressed Post: The LHC group should lobby the MUON1 (nutreno reseach) screen saver people over to BOINC. Why should CERN do this? Why would they want to? There is no LHC work not available "problem". Geek - you need to think before you post. Oh - and btw I looked at your web site. From what you have posted here I can't imagine why anyone would employ you. |

(Message 13444)
Posted 25 Apr 2006 by Gaspode the UnDressed Post: When there is such a small number remaining why not just send these work units out to a few more computers to speed things up a bit? Or does it not really matter because the next batch isn't ready to be sent out to us anyway? The problem with your suggestion is that it requires a manual intervention by CERN staff to do it. With a system as involved as BOINC, wading in to do the job by hand can cause more problems than it solves. This is why orphaned units tend to be left in the databases. There's plenty of other work for the CERN people to do, so a delay of a couple of days getting the results back isn't a problem. |
