Many of the report pages are cached to improve performance. Take a look again tomorrow. If it remains incorrect report it in the number crunching forum where hopefully Chrulle will see it.

It's happened to everyone - there's a problem with the database that CERN are aware of.

All this has been mentioned in the message boards - look there for an update

It has become apparent that there's some sort of database problem causing this. CERN are aware that there are difficulties, but I haven't seen any sign of a solution yet.

Ack Paul, but as volunteers, we get what we pay for, yes?

[edit]
It's not to say that we can't or shouldn't complain, but more to the point that we know that the complaints hotline is down due to project constraints, so don't expect any meaningful answers at the moment.

I contacted Ben Segal this morning about the database problems. He's the LHC@Home project manager. He responded within an hour, but he's now waiting for one of the techies to get on to it.

On the plus side, CERN know about the problems.

On the minus side, they have no dedicated resource to fix them.

Sorry...

There's a problem with the database. The CERN people are aware of it, but it might take them a few hours to sort it out. Try again next week.

At first this looked like a new occurrence of the infamous file_deleter bug, but with other problems surfacing it seems that there more to it than that.

It looks like there's a fairly serious database corruption.

I hope someone notices...

I just got a reply to my note to Ben Segal - he's getting someone to check the database, so with luck these problems will be ironed out in a few hours.

Is this a public domain mp3? If not it would be a shame to see LHC@home shutdown for carrying this sort of link.

Best remove it before the copyright police find it.

The last time someone did that, they looked at the floor, and saw that it was flat; looked at a field, and saw that it was flat, looked at a map of their region, and saw that it was flat, and then assumed the rest of the world was flat.

Actually, physicists are doing it all the time. It's a basic tenet of cosmology that the same rules of physics hold everywhere. It's not clear to me how they can be so sure about this. For example, if there were some property of light that caused photons to lose energy over great distances then the whole red-shift method of estimating distances could be open to question.

53) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Explaining LHC Screensaver (Message 14038)
Posted 19 Jun 2006 by Gaspode the UnDressed
Post:
You are quite right - the screen saver has nothing much to do with the computing being done. It represents a number of particles moving under mutual attraction around a central point. There is no link to the particles in the Sixtrack model. The only data relating to the model being run is the count of the number of turns.

That said, it is very pretty!
54) Message boards : Number crunching : Mac Intel anyone? (Message 14027)
Posted 18 Jun 2006 by Gaspode the UnDressed
Post:
There is no version for any Mac available. The issue has been extensively explored in the message boards, but put simply to get the best from the Windows and Linux x86 systems (the most common) a compiler hass been chosen isn't available for the Mac environment.

There is very little development or admin support available for LHC at present, so it's very unlikely that any Mac version (even for Intel Macs) will become available.

I wasn't suggesting that he host the pages, but rather that he provide a "universal BOINC portal" that read the project pages as they are (with the non-standard code (such as "<p>") and output them in his beloved XHTML.

What on earth would be the point of this? As a participant I don't care if the pages are compliant with W3C, XHTML or ancient greek provided my browser renders them correctly. I'll continue to use the project web site rather than any 'portal', so pages that I see will remain as they are. I suspect most participants will do likewise. If Rytis wants to do this as a technical exercise for his own interest that's fine, but it'll serve no useful purpose.

...and that's really the point. Rytis wants to update the pages to adhere to some standard that he's nominated. David Anderson disagrees, and is continuing with the standard to which he's been working.

Do I care? Not one bit.

If we ever see a day when browsers will only render XHTML-compliant documents then the argument will be different, but no browser writer is going to produce such a beast when the vast majority of the web does not (and probably won't ever) comply with that standard.

hehe - but if you wait until September AMD will have a new offering that's better yet. Of course, if you wait that long then it's not much longer until Intel release their next product upgrade in around February. If you've waited for that then it's worth waiting a bit longer because AMD have a really good processor scheduled for release in 2007Q2. But then again, just a few weeks later...

It's probably best not to upgrade at all, since you'll always miss out on that upgrade just around the corner.

;-)

FWIW I won't now be upgrading anything until Microsoft releases a proper requirements list for Vista.

thank you.
THat helps set the context a bit.

Is it possible for RYTIS to front-end the BOINC pages and make his own easier to use web site that fulfills his desire for XHTML?

The BOINC pages are project specific. That is, each project hosts its own pages based on the original BOINC template. Rytis couldn't host the pages for each project, and in any case, it wouldn't be appropriate. It still wouldn't address his desire for XHTML since the underlying templates wouldn't be XHTML-compliant anyway.

This change would need to be done by David Anderson's team, if it needs to be done at all.

LHC Alpha is a closed project used for testing new versions of application software, server code, etc. as SixTrack isn't undergoing significant development at present there shouldn't be much difference.

The problem seems to relate to those people using account managers like BAM. Maybe one should stick with the manual way of doing things until the bugs are ironed out and all the projects are updated.

No, maybe this project should stop taking the crunching community for granted and get someone in there to work on things that need doing. I don't think that is asking too much in return. Beside, account managers have been in the works for the better part of a year and they should not have been taken unawares.

And maybe the crunchers themselves should be more realistic. BOINC has had release after release of bug-ridden software - both server and client. It comes as no surprise that account managers don't work. With the ever increasing number of projects is it realistic to expect every project to update its servers immediately to introduce new features that it doesn't need and which don't work?

And just to make matters worse we have this 'open-source' ideal, with any number of individuals of varying levels of competence producing optimised 'this' and high-performance 'that', and add-ons that work only when they feel like it.

What BOINC needs is someone to take real control of quality assurance for client, server, and add-ons. Then we might see fewer of these problems, and less whining from the inconvenienced participants.

I have great respect for Rom Walton and what he has achieved. The time has come to recognise the scale of the project and apply appropriate resources.

If David Anderson isn't careful the whole edifice he has built will sink, maybe deservedly, into the swamp.

...and that's my rant for the week ;-)
