Hi @ll,
this is completely useless SPAM...
I just wanted to say that after installing Boinc yesterday evening and then reading about no work being available from LHC@home, I got today my first computing done for the project. Ok, CPU time (sec) was only 6.56 with claimed credit of 0.02, so nothing big, but at least it did work out!

Everyone has to start some where.

Same here. But it was nice to see
some kind of work anyway.

The field for typing this message ends>
and then the text goes behind the background before it gets to the end of the <field and then there is a line return>

this is not helpful either.

But when I look a the post it looks OK. Now I am in edit m>ode and the text is <running off the end of the page. I was using the<> symbol>
s to mark where my text was dissapearing and reapearing.

If I remember correctly, this site is not using the latest versions of the BOINC server software. This may contribute to the differences you see between this and other projects.

I've got 3 windows machines all running 5.10.20 and not a problem yet. The only thing is you have to completely shut your old manager down before installing it no matter what version your upgrading from. I think I'll stick with what I've got.

I din't do that on my VISTA PC and it came back all happy.

Maybe a little taste of their own medicine will get us, the people who donate the CPU time that makes this project work, the respect we deserve.

Respect is earned, and not always deserved. This is not a poke at you, but a comment on this process. You can have the well intentioned desire to improve this project, but ultimately this does fall into the hands of those runing the project. I am sure that they would love to upgrade the server systems to the latest and greatest, but may have other internal politics to deal with that cannot be discussed in this open forum.

And to quote a cliche "all good things take time". "Patience is a virtue".

Edit: OK, I figure perhaps the 30-minute backoff was to try to get reporting done before forcing the 24-hour backoff. Dunno what to say. I'll check to see what happens with the 4 units I pick up over the next 2 hours, but I think the 30-minute rule doesn't get the final 2 results reported until tomorrow unless I hit the update button myself...

Yep, that's exactly what happened. I had one short running result, so it got reported on the contact that happened 30 minutes after the download of the first two results. The 2nd result finished at about 40 minutes after it was first downloaded, so the 2nd result went up in the report just a few minutes ago. However, here's what the scheduler did:

10/27/2007 8:41:44 PM|lhcathome|Sending scheduler request: To fetch work
10/27/2007 8:41:44 PM|lhcathome|Requesting 256151 seconds of new work, and reporting 1 completed tasks
10/27/2007 8:41:54 PM|lhcathome|Scheduler RPC succeeded [server version 505]
10/27/2007 8:41:54 PM|lhcathome|Message from server: No work sent
10/27/2007 8:41:54 PM|lhcathome|Message from server: (reached daily quota of 4 results)
10/27/2007 8:41:54 PM|lhcathome|Deferring communication for 22 hr 27 min 48 sec
10/27/2007 8:41:54 PM|lhcathome|Reason: requested by project

So, to report the remaining 2 results, I'll have to manually push the update button or wait until the next contact some 22 hours away...

Brian

OK, so I misread the POST header. But still the back off times were not for the reason of reaching the daily quota, I had see that before. But the systems were unattended and I was not controling the times of the WAIT between communication events, it was all on the software and the server. If I go back far enough in the logs I will find an item similar to the one shown above. When I looked at the web site after the last message I saw that there was work, about 90,000 units at that time and rising as I refreshed.

I have detatched and rebooted with the same result, "no work from project" because of too recent a request.

I am currently focusing on POEM and LHC on my home PC's and this is the only one doing this. the other 3 PC's are XP(2) and 2k(1).

I go through computers often in my shop ... burn-in for a while b4 going out to my happy-happy end users. I've noticed that since last week, I had one host that is added as a new host everytime it connects. Now, I have two hosts multiplying like rabbits. I merged over 65 hosts today and was wondering if it's an Easter Bunny thing, or should I NOT connect any new hosts to this project?!

1st: http://lhcathome.cern.ch/show_host_detail.php?hostid=7608458

2nd: http://lhcathome.cern.ch/show_host_detail.php?hostid=7624753

The only thing I've done differently with these new hosts is use BAM for initial setup. However, I did not select LHC to 'attach by default', which has me perplexed???!!!???

BAM was doing this to me last year too. I have since stopped using it. I do it all manually. Not as convienient but I dont have to merge too much anymore.

It's been fun, sometimes.

Crunch well!

Too bad! I know that it seems that nothing is going on with LHC, but if you look at what they have to do to get their science going you might have more patience. It can take quite a while (months,if not years) before they have an experiment set up so that they can generate information to analyze. had you been to their web site? This is not the only source of news about CERN and the LHC. CERN

Hey, who's bothered?
There are plenty of projects on BOINC to keep your PC busy...........

We are all arguing round in circles now, so for the sake of sanity, could everyone PLEASE read THIS and then just drop the subject please!

Must we?

OK, lets talk about somthing serious like Starving children in New York city's upper east side or who is the best actor in the Monty Python series?

I like to keep bumping it up to encourage everyone willing to listen to lower their cache time...
