Posted 15 Mar 2018 by Ben Segal Post: Why he did not get a Nobel prize? Much lesser people got it. There has been lots of controversy over why astronomers don't get Nobels (although astrophysicists have done). There's a good paper on this topic at https://home.fnal.gov/~carrigan/nobel/Nobel_space.htm There are some anecdotes trying to explain this, and the same for mathematicians (for whom there are definitely no Nobels) by claiming that Alfred Nobel's wife ran away with an astronomer/mathematician respectively. Amusing, but apparently Alfred Nobel wasn't married... Another nice reference is at http://mathforum.org/social/articles/ross.html. |

Theory application reaches 4 TRILLION events today !!
(Message 34620)
Posted 14 Mar 2018 by Ben Segal Post: LHC@home's Theory application today passed the milestone of 4 TRILLION simulated events. This project, under its earlier name "Test4Theory", began production in 2011 and was the first BOINC project to use Virtual Machine technology (based on CERN's CernVM system). We will be publishing some more details for you on the LHC@home and CERN websites over the coming days. Here is a first release: http://lhcathome.web.cern.ch/articles/test4theory/test4theory-tops-4-trillion-events Many thanks to all our volunteers for enabling this achievement ! |

Theory's endless looping
(Message 34611)
Posted 13 Mar 2018 by Ben Segal Post: Hi CP. Hi again, I just met with Peter and Anton and they said: 1. Even looping jobs are sometimes useful for development, especially for Sherpa. 2. Anton will try and add a check in the code to detect looping and terminate gracefully. 3. Thanks to all our volunteers! And tomorrow we pass 4 TRILLION EVENTS for Theory !!!! Ben |

Theory tasks failing
(Message 34033)
Posted 22 Jan 2018 by Ben Segal Post: since a few hours, all Theory tasks fail after about half an hour with "207 (0x000000CF) EXIT_NO_SUB_TASKS" Thanks for the heads-up. I just asked our system manager (Nils) about it and he replied: "This is probably because the Condor node handling jobs for Theory is being updated for Spectre and Meltdown today. https://cern.service-now.com/service-portal/view-outage.do?n=OTG0041682 Should be back again soon. Cheers, Nils" |

Posted 20 Jan 2018 by Ben Segal Post: Happy (very soon) birthday Magic!!! I found passing 60 quite a mental effort so you have my sympathy there. But I have good news for you: passing 70 and then even 80 was much easier. It also helps if you reckon your age in hexadecimal: I just passed 50 which is about how I feel most days. All the very best and lots of thanks for your dedication. Ben |

Posted 19 Jan 2018 by Ben Segal Post: Hi Magic, Erich and maeax, Please don't be discouraged! Actually this issue was discussed at our last LHC@home coordination meeting at CERN last Tuesday. The feeling was that volunteers would feel SUPPORTED when they saw that CERN was not just leaving them to run alone but was contributing some of its own resources in periods when these became idle. You should know that LHC@home has higher and higher visibility these days at CERN and in the LHC experiments due to its very substantial contributions. It would really not be the time to give up now!! Thanks to all our volunteers and Happy New Year from the team. |

Sorry, the Billionaire's Club software has not been updated since changes were made to the MCPlots database format. So it won't work until we find someone to fix it. |

Visit to CERN - A great Experience
(Message 33100)
Posted 21 Nov 2017 by Ben Segal Post: I, too, recommend the tour, having taken it 4 years ago. It's good that the guide is one of the scientists that we are, in some small way, helping although perhaps there should be some mention and promotion of LHCathome and Boinc which might encourage others on the tour to join if they have not already done so, to be part of the science. The 3D virtual tour was good although it is still hard to imagine the sheer scale of the detector without actually having a peek into the cavern itself. You will be happy to learn that some information about LHC@home is now being prepared for the visits, including a new LHC@home T-shirt for sale in the Reception shop. I agree that this is long overdue! Ben |

Theory's endless looping
(Message 31202)
Posted 30 Jun 2017 by Ben Segal Post: The Sherpa scientists have been contacted and are discussing the best way to deal with these cases. They are rare but the system does try to "learn" from their occurrences and improve subsequent parameter choices - so they are not entirely wasted effort on your part. Thanks for all your inputs on this topic (and all your crunching!)... |

GPU Computing
(Message 30486)
Posted 25 May 2017 by Ben Segal Post: In fact the reason the LHC experiment and Theory applications don't use GPU is porting difficulty. Sixtrack is the exception and a GPU port is on the way, as is an ARM port, so let's not exclude Sixtrack. Developing a Linux-only solution isn't worthwhile in general as Windows platforms are still around 90% of the volunteer population. But ATLAS has tried out a native Linux app without VirtualBox. Otherwise VBox remains vital for LHC@home whether we like it or not. Sorry about that, Ben |
