21) Message boards : LHC@home Science : Gravity ? (Message 19245)

If I remember correctly gravity is an extremely weak force in relationship to other forces (like the electromagnetic or strong nuclear forces). One of the goals for the LHC is to try and find the Higgs particle, that is postulated to be the cause of gravity! I'm remember reading that gravity has been compensated for in the design as part of the device is under a mountain and part isn't.

Ok I'll just start by saying I am not a Scientist just an interested observer. My question is would the experiments due to be performed on the LHC have different results dependent on force of Gravity. If I offend anyone with my ignorance I apologize in advance

I also would be interested. My MacBook Pro has crunched in the last month as much as all my WinTel Systems have in a year or more!

Well I do LOVE my Mac....well maybejust maybe love is to strong a work. But it is crunching about as much as my other 4 computers are right now, or maybe even more so. Umm. Munch Munch Munch. But it does not run LHC. Well that kinda makes up for LHC being given 10:1 priority over everything else.

Well that depends ... the first 500 people per store got one. Even if they didn't buy anything. I had been looking at getting a mac for some time now, but was waiting for the new OS to come out first. So with the free t-shirt offer I decided to get one on launch day. I got the smallest mac book pro. I'm quite happy with it. I have a number of very old macs (68000 mPU) from a time when macs were MORE popular then PC's.

....and a free OS X tee shirt too!

WHAT!?! They're giving out t-shirts!?! I might have to convince the wife I need a new computer with Leopard so I can get the t-shirt!!

I think anyone at an Apple store on launch night/evening got one, I was kinda tempted but it was Friday night and I had a gig to go to.

You might be right about that, but I know a number of people who are getting interested in Mac's. I just got one so go figure...and a free OS X tee shirt too!

Leopard is out today but I really can't see it being a big deal outside the Mac fanboy herds, I don't think it will drive sales.

With the new Mac OS out today(?) I think many people are gonna get new Macs. It might be good for the project to have the ability for Macs to Munch some numbers also.

To be blunt: Perhaps you are the one with the bad assumption?

Far too many people assume that ... they are without fault. Bad assumption.

It is my mPU time to waste. I am here because I choose to be. I hope the LHC proves the Standard Model to be wrong, but if I'm wrong that would be OK too.

... I'll be writing ... to explain how LHC wastes ... CPU cycles....

My 2 cents worth...

1: I doubt that the engineers assembling this beast really wait much longer, if at all with the IR set to 5 rather then 3. Why? Because we have more hungry systems then work to do. The work gets done much faster then the "due by" date. I'm sure they are not just "sitting around" waiting for us to get done; I'm sure they have scheduled work as needed and don't just wait for us. [Yes I know you think that we waste 40% that could be used by other projects - see point #4]

2: We work for "them", in this case being LHC@home. If "they" wanted to set the IR to what ever, then let them set it. Yes voice your opinion, but don't keep hammering it when you don't get your way.

3: From my understanding the internal and international coordination efforts probably totally swamp this piddly 3 vs 5 IR issue. You need to keep some perspective.

4: Act locally. If you are really that concerned with efficiency and waste what are YOU doing about it? Are you using solar/battery power to run your systems? Have you gotten rid of all other applications on your systems and removed any non essential tasks so that back ground task switching does not use CPU time? Are your running RAID 5 or 10 to speed disk access? Do you have enough real memory so that you never swap out to disk? Are you using Dual Quad CPU's? Are your systems dedicated? Have you installed a virus/spam gateway device (like IronPort)and removed antivirus/antispam software from your systems that don't access the internet except for BOINC?

5: Help ME - ]:8) Send me $10K US and I'll match it and install Solar Power. Send me $500 or more and I'll match it and replace my W98 system with some fast modern system(s). You could probably help the project out more by sending THEM the money!

6: Get other people to join the project or at least BOINC.

It is also posible to let LHC running with Crossover. If anyone is interested, I can write a little howto.

Yes downloading .exe files is a security risk and is not allowed from your work computer for good cause. Does your work know about and approve of the use of the work computers for BOINC work? If not you are in violation of the BOINC user agreements. Just a little reminder. However if they are in agreement and approve you could perhaps ask your security guys to allow .exe from these server addresses, or perhaps just to you.

Client Errors

.... The problem was the company proxydoesn't allow the downloading of files that end in ".exe". Apparently some of the download file names ... ended in ".exe" ... :(

Your millage may vary,
Paul

Not a Whole lot of work from the project + a news thingie so the PM (project managment) expect a lot of new crunchers to be asking for work. You are limited to two WU per CPU per DAY and also how often you ask for work / contact the server. They are trying to spread the wealth so to speak.

I just reattached to LHC after months of being detached, and all I can get is 4 WU's a day. It started off with just 2 WU/day. What's up? This machine has no errors, and is pretty quick. Seems something is amiss on the server side.
At least other projects are getting the benefit; I'm sure they are grateful.

I like the 2 per CPU per day rate. It gives all of my systems a chance to help out. At the rate we are eating WUs we will have them all done by Monday or Tuesday at which time we will be at "how come I can't get ANY WU's from the project stage." The 2 per cpu per day gives us that have more then one system a little credit for haveing more then one system, but allows more people access to the WUs. I think what might happen in the future is 2 WU per user however ]:8(

Try modifying your general preferences so that you don't connect more then .1 times per day. I think if you don't stretch out your connections you will not get work for the moment.

“If the test does not find what the theory predicts about W boson scattering,” said UCSD physics professor Benjamin Grinstein, “it would be evidence that one of string theory's key mathematical assumptions is violated.”[/quote]

But on the other hand ... it would help if the findings match the theory. I find string theory compelling on a visceral level.
