1) Message boards : Number crunching : Too low credits granted in LHC (Message 23280)

Post:
For the first time in months my LHC credit is going UP = My computer(s) (not me) are hopefully actually achieving something worth while.

I personally let my comps crunch for projects I believe in not the amount of credit per WU, per FLOP, per Second or what ever.

Post:
I'm afraid the reason you have not had credit is that this project has an inability to award credit of very low value.
Numerous others are in the same boat. There are countless other threads on this subject. You will just have to live with it.

This also means that you cannot clean up/delete any computers that have pending credit. here is my list of pending units - and it's probably a small one compared to many others. The bottom 3 will prob get credit but most of the rest are years old.

3) Message boards : Number crunching : Maximum daily WU quota per CPU? (Message 19208)
Posted 12 Mar 2008 by Colin Porter
Post:
Looking at the amount of WU's available just now.

Server Status
Up, 73139 workunits to crunch
94735 workunits in progress
8 concurrent connections

Would it be possible to increase the daily quota?

Even if only for a couple of days?

Two of my comps have already returned their limits for today. Must be others in the same boat whose comps could be used to return results quicker.

edit :- Still going up as well.
Server Status
Up, 74245 workunits to crunch

7 concurrent connections - End edit.

The WU avalanche would seem to mean that everyone who wants wu's are getting enough, leaving a lot waiting on a comp being available.
4) Message boards : Number crunching : What's with the tiny work units? (Message 18990)
Posted 8 Feb 2008 by Colin Porter
Post:
From what I believe - There is a plan.

Some time in the future (when the LHC@Home BOINC version is updated) all the WU's
that currently show zero as pending credit but actually claim a very small amount
of credit (i.e. 0.9 or less)will all be cleaned up and either credit awarded or just deleted!

Yes, just deleted, sounds bad, but when you consider that I have approaching 100 of these WU's and most claim in the order of 0.00215526329022802, well I think even the real credit chasers can live with losing these sort of amounts in the cause of scientific progress.

EDIT - Dosen't stop them being annoying though. End EDIT
5) Message boards : Number crunching : Solid white bar at bottom of graphics display ? (Message 18240)
Posted 17 Oct 2007 by Colin Porter
Post:
Is my display correct?

Then there is a solid white bar most of the time with a small border at both ends. Occasionally with 1 or 2 of the themes there is some very faint text which is unreadable in this area.

Is it possible to adjust a setting to get this display to show correctly?

From what I remember - I had exactly the same on in the past on a P3 laptop.

I played about with the graphics acceleration which seems to have got rid of the white bar.

In that area of the screensaver/graphics you should have a progress bar showing how many turns have been done and how many the wu is expecting.

Can anyone else shed any more light on this?

one important thing i want to promote is: the quota should take into account the number of cores of a CPU,

Think you'll find if you look under your computer info where the daily quota is shown that it is in fact

Quote "Maximum daily WU quota per CPU = 2/day"

For CPU read 'Cores' thats certainly how it worked on my machines i.e. my dual core has done 4 wu's today and the single core has only done 2.

Reality = Nice job, even if I can't get anymore wu's today at least I know there will be some left tomorrow and probably for a few days given that status now says

This must be the highest number of wu's sent out for over a year.

As an example I give you a wu from Einstein

Einstein unit

basically the wu was initially issued on 8th June but did not reach quorum until 27th July !! enought said?

The project admins/scientist are the only people who have the whole picture, we who contribute our resourses can only trust that they are choosing the correct
parameters. Thats not to say we cannot suggest what we think is better. Einstein can afford this kind of thing occasionally, LHC can't.

I left my PC running and picked up only two WU's in the last batch, about 6 hrs ago. They both have a complete deadline of Aug 8th.
Two is good - four would be more good!
I'm set for network connect every 1 days - although is usually online for most of the day. For more WU's should this be .1 day? 5 days?
I've an Intel 1.6GHz, it's in a Toshiba laptop so I run only at 30% CPU useage to minimize overheating. Is this what's limiting how many WU's I get?
The WU currently running is at 49% complete so far.
Mike

The connect interval determines your cache level. i.e. how many days work is stored on your comp. The higher the number the more wu's you will get. BUT be careful you don't get too many and start missing deadlines in other projects. Personally mine is set to 0.1, but I am on always connected broadband internet.

Only having 30% usage set will also reduce how much work your comp gets. If you use the machine for other intensive tasks then 30% is probably reasonable but I have two laptops which I just let run at 100%. One of them has been doing BOINC for over three years now with very few problems.

MAGIC -

YOU urgently need to look at your computers.

They are constantly returning "client errors".

Everytime this happens it reduces the amount of wu's you are allowed per day.

That is in order to reduce the errors for the project, as the affected wu then needs to be sent to someone elses comp.

Have you changed something recently?

Suggest you set "No new Work" until you get it sorted.

Probably nothing wrong with your comp. It's just normal LHC.

We get a batch of WU's to crunch then nothing for a while (sometimes weeks) while results are analysed. Then it's back to work again.
