Why does the screensaver spend too % of CPU time ?
(Message 18714)
Posted 16 Dec 2007 by PovAddict Post: The screensaver is really nice. You need a decently-good (no need for very high-end) graphics card. If your graphics card doesn't have the 3D acceleration needed, all the 3D stuff will be emulated by your CPU instead. Even with a good gfx card, the screensaver will *always* use *some* extra CPU, so computation will be slower than without the screensaver. |

Posted 9 Dec 2007 by PovAddict Post: Is there a Command line interface I could use to periodically scan the LHC@HOME main web page for the absence of a string (such as "Up. Out of Work.) Scraping the complex-layout main web page for that will probably be very painful. How about the XML server_status? |

Project encountered internal error: shared memory
(Message 18611)
Posted 18 Nov 2007 by PovAddict Post: That would be true on a normal computer, but from memory isn't the Shared Memory on a BOINC server the space where they keep all the results for various platforms? There is a process on the server that loads some work from the database into the shared memory block. The scheduler starts whenever somebody asks for work, and it reads the data from the shared memory block (instead of going to the DB directly). |

BOINC 5.10.28
(Message 18589)
Posted 12 Nov 2007 by PovAddict Post: I have a high speed quad core machine that I connect to the internet maybe twice a week (until I get a wireless network setup at least) so I usually upload and download a lot of work durnig those times. As I'm running 5.10.20 is that going to effect me? No, it won't. It only matters for micromanagers, stat-freaks, etc. who want to report work immediately. BOINC will still get work as usual, and when doing so, it will report any completed work back. |

Stand back.......
(Message 18481)
Posted 31 Oct 2007 by PovAddict Post: I now know what type of user you are and I really didn't want to believe there would be people like that on LHC@home but there are. Hey, I'm not a "hacker" with bad intentions. If I was, I could have done much worse things than just a forum post from your account. When I found the bug, I reported i privately, and helped fix it (and we found other bugs during the tests). Then I privately contacted some project admins telling them to upgrade. I could have gone around all existing projects stealing account keys instead; but I didn't. I did it with your account now just to show what kind of holes are hidden in the ancient server. I'll stay away from LHC now. But I think there are a few options: 1) You upgrade the server. 2) You fix or workaround the security bugs, as a temporary solution (you may contact me so I tell you the ones I know). 3) You wait for more hacks to happen (not by me; I won't do anything else). Somebody just told me "I think I could update all LHC users' resource share to 0, I'd just have to dig out old code". 4) You shut the project down until either 1) or 2) is done to avoid 3). Just my opinion. |

Posted 31 Oct 2007 by PovAddict Post: Your post was deleted for a different reason than the above and you know why I'll have done that and I'm well within my rights to do that. Or do you disagree with that? Well, what if I put hidden messages on all my posts? This one, for example, may have more hidden instructions, visible when replying. Instructions: How to make people logout constantly. It's quite simple. Change your forum signature to include the following (without the spaces): [ img ] http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/logout.php [ /img ] When somebody loads the "image" on your signature, it would log him out. That is, everybody would get logged out whenever he loads a thread where you have posted. Really annoying :D EDIT: removed the account-key-stealer code. |

When my screen savers starts up sixtrack will not display any graphics the screen just goes blank. But BIONC/sixtrack is working. Just no graphics. If I go into BOINC manager and click on show graphics, it will show up. why???
(Message 18469)
Posted 31 Oct 2007 by PovAddict Post: Well, I got the exact same problem. I installed BOINC today and have set it as my screen saver. when I click the preview button, the screen saver loads and then, it starts and everything is fine. But, when I wait for the screen saver to start for real, it says, BOINC screen saver loading and then, the screen becomes blank and, nothing... Why is that? I don't know. I tried to change some settings (always running, running only after a few min, etc.) but, it stays the same... What version of BOINC, and what version of Windows? |
