21) Message boards : Number crunching : Download problems? (Message 19834)

Uh-huh ...
PieFace is not the only one with problems his morning. Two of my machines are exhibiting the same problem. Partial download and failure of the system to complete the transmission.
Second problem, although of lesser concern -- IE screens do not properly display/respond. Had to shift to firefox just to get this message properly posted.

WOOHOO!

Now if they could just get passed the shared memory error on the server I'd be able to upload!

Live long and BOINC!

Hmmmm --

I thought they had identified/fixed the 'shared memory error' problem. Guess not ....

The concerns/complaints about minimal/no work reminds me a bit of the story I used to hear around the campfire when I was much younger -- the story itself was not the key, but rather the very final sentence:

"Patience -------, patience."

25) Message boards : Number crunching : "Stuck" WU? (Message 19628)

As per usual, Paul has hit the nail directly on the head -- again.

Before I start, I wish to make it perfectly clear, that I am not a programmer. That said, it would seem that a change to the program so it would test for two or three specific points --- completion percentage of WU in question; the processing duration for the projects (how many minutes before it switches from one project to another); the extimated run time left on the WU in question ...

What I'm trying to say, is if the darn project is within a time cycle of finishing, let it finish, then switch to the next job in the line ...

As per usual, Buck has been much more eloquent in his responses to the Leaders of the Board than I ever could, but I have to second his responses -- we are here because we want to help, if only in some small way.

There are other projects running that we can support, and if we have a machine (or machines for the fortunate) select one or more of those projects to fill your waiting hours - I do ...

To Keck and Buck--

As 'old timers' around here you're making two apparently unwarranted assumptions:

1) That the 'sticky' notes are ever read ...

2) Assuming they are read, that they are understood.

Maybe I shouldn't throw stones - heck, we all was 'newbies' at one time ...

Well, before I start, I want to state categorically -- I am not affiliated with LHC (other than processing Work Units).

Now - as far as the different WU labels, I would think that those with the "wma" header apply to the Muon Accelerator; those with "LHC" in them are probably for the collider as a whole (possibly fine tuning magnet strength, or alignment, etc)

Again, this is just my guess on your question ...

Looks like the only thing running right now is the message board section. Follow this link --> http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/server_status.php

I agree, that it will probably be the first of the week before this is corrected, but anyone who has data out there ready to return will likely get the proper credit ...

I seldom get on my soapbox, and I'll try not to expound here, but if people would simply read and UNDERSTAND what they read, then maybe lawsuits like this would be fewer and farther between. Hopefully, this lawsuit will get thrown out of court.
32) Message boards : Number crunching : Please increase our daily machine quota (Message 18149)

Well I, for one, do in fact spread my machine(s) across several projects. Granted you cannot 'gunny-sack' the work and return it at your leisure, but more of the crunching public can accomplish some work, and feel like they too are a part of this project.

Will "the-powers-that-be" change the setpoint in the future - only they can answer that, but since even my antiquated PIII machines complete their daily share of work from LHC in a little more than 5 hours, a little looosening of the reins wouldn't hurt. Of course, that's not taking into account that the next software revision might just take longer to calculate the results (depending on what is being calculated).

A misquote from the movie 'Grease' comes to mind:
..."enjoy the ride, or step to the side"

Hey - I can remember in the not-too-far-distant past where we had similar problems with SETI. Always seemed to happen over a weekend. Finally traced down (I think) to some knuckle-dragging sanitation engineer who would liberate power plugs from service receptacles just so he could run his floor buffer.

Not saying that it's the problem here, but one never knows.

FWIW -- I don't think this is a "new" issue, it seems like this condition has existed for some time. Short of you "detaching" your computer from the project, then re-attaching with your friend's account, I'm not sure there's a way to do what you desire ...
