A note about this update: Several users lately have been adding a team tag in front of their user names to indicate belonging to a specific team. While this is understandable, it makes trying to organize placemarks somewhat difficult, and in some cases made user names ridiculously long. As a result, starting now and in future, team tags will be left off a user's name when added to the placemark file. If you wish to indicate your allegiance in the file, you can always contact me and give me the URL of a custom team signature or other graphic or text to be included in your placemark's label (the box that pops up when a placemark is selected in Google Earth) and I will be happy to include it in the next update. For the past year or so I have been maintaining a Google Earth placemark file showing the locations of any BOINC participants who wished to be included. I took it over from the original creator, bjango, because I thought it was just too cool to let pass into obscurity. The file can be found on the Google Earth Community message board here. Users are listed in the file alphabetically, rather than by country, as Google Earth has graphical search features that are more than adequate to show you who is situated in a particular city, state, province or country. Each placemark is shown as a custom colour-coded icon in the classic BOINC font. A blue "B" indicates a regular user. A gold "B" indicates someone involved with the operation of a project (i.e. an administrator, developer, or scientist, but not a tester or forum moderator). A red "B" indicates the founder of an established team of five or more members. Anyone who wishes to be included, please just step right up and say so! Tell me either through this message thread or by private message. Merely a city, or rough location, is sufficient. I'll put your marker in a neutral location, such as a park, body of water, or landmark of your choice (don't want any cyberstalkers being able to see right where you live...) Anyone familiar with Google Earth and wishing to customize their locations and labels can email me a .kmz file as an attachment for inclusion. Send it to bcboinc (-at-) fandom.ca Also, for anyone wishing to be included but who have set "International" as your country on BOINC, I offer the following largely neutral choices: 90 degrees North latitude 90 degrees South latitude Mount Everest The International Date Line (somewhere in the ocean) The United Nations building in New York City Additions and corrections are sought and encouraged. I am especially interested to know of any user who may warrant a different colour icon or users who have either moved or have stopped crunching BOINC, and can thus reasonably be taken out of the file. BOINC (Message 11828) Posted 4 Jan 2006 by Raven Post: Once again, British Columbia makes the headlines for being at the cutting edge of dealing with tough social issues, as shown in this article from News of the Weird: Andrew Uitvlugt, candidate for mayor of Kelowna, British Columbia, proposed in November to coax drug addicts into public jobs, such as trash collection, by rewarding them with crack cocaine, on the theory that the work would be so fulfilling that they would ultimately decline the drugs. (He finished fourth out of five candidates.) [Calgary Herald, 11-11-05; Vancouver Sun, 11-20-05] B.C. BOINC - Caffeine is our drug of choice.

I know this has been done over at Seti. Thankfully, they seem to have done just that, now. Saves a lot of clutter either trying to salvage or remaking team invite threads.

(Message 10985) Posted 25 Oct 2005 by Raven Post: Wouldn't be so bad if, as on other phpBB boards, you had an endless window of time to go back and edit your posts or the ability to delete your posts and threads. The team invites forum, for example, is a mess now because, previously, LHC only supported HTML in posts, and now have gone to the opposite extreme.

BBCode tags only, courtesy of BOINC Server v5.x.x :) An endless parade of standards to (re-)adhere to. :/ It's especially bad when you consider that originally LHC didn't support BBCode at all... Now, the opposite extreme, making everything unreadable.
