Posted 28 Nov 2006 by ![]() Post: There are a few issues here. I do not think you are screen scraping here. There is nothin wrong with what you do. As a project admin and owner I do not have a problem with RPCs or HTTP GETs being used by each team for their own team data. If more than a team's own data is needed then the stats xml export should be used. I do object to hundreds and thousands of GETs for multiple teams being processed by my systems when that is entriely the wrong thing to do. I have already blocked Ip addresses that do that and will block any others I find. I guess I would also object if every team started collecting data using the GET method though. That would be more work than an ftp of the xml files as it involves dbms activity which is something projects struggle to minimise. So on balance its OK in small quantities but if everyone starts doing it then I guess projects will find a way to turn it off. Hope that helps the debate. |

A live audience with Dr Anderson & colleagues
(Message 15016)
Posted 7 Oct 2006 by ![]() Post: If you were to have the opportunity to take part in a live on-line question & answer session with Dr David Anderson & others, would you like to take part ? You would ? Well. BOINC UK and Team Lookers have arranged exactly that with Dr Anderson & colleagues. A live, on-line question & answer session where YOU get the chance to put your questions to them. As you will agree, this is a unique opportunity which has not been available before. For your chance to be on the live panel of BOINC participants (and see further information) you need to register here. This page also contains the conditions of eligibility. The panel has a limited number of places so you must register to be eligible for the draw. Your email addresses will not be released to any third party under any circumstances. The session will also be released as a podcast and mp3. If a mod could sticky this it would be appreciated. Thanks |

bunc - BOINC UK Team Lookers first News Letter for Boinc Projects
(Message 13197)
Posted 30 Mar 2006 by ![]() Post: Yeah a tricky one for sure. Best bet form a new Aussie BOINC federation and ask all teams to retain identity but join the federation. Create a council where the most senior and respected have private chats. Slowly introduce federation symbols and "speak" that will be used by all teams and members. Have common values. Align team aims. Give vocal people important jobs. This has a habit of working...look at The European Union....its all happened and not many noticed. Those that did got big jobs. Try that formula! Or you could all join BOUNCUK & Team Lookers instead I guess. Come to the Mother Country and be hugged! :-) |

Posted 29 Mar 2006 by ![]() Post: Like so: Hey nice site too! Hi to Austarlia from ya cousins! Thanks for sorting the url for me. I started with bb then went html and back to a new thing called bbhtml (hehe :))which resulted in my screw up lol!. Again thanks. Lookers is the team ( if someone was looking to join they would search for Lookers) but it also goes under the name BOINC UK & Lookers. It used to be known as Seti UK and Lookers. Its all one thing but boinc uk is the new domain and recently launched with new web site, sigs and now that great news letter. |

What ports does BOINC use for network access?
(Message 10661)
Posted 9 Oct 2005 by ![]() Post: <blockquote>Port 443 is 100% reserved for HTTPS (HTTP with SSL encryption) communication. http://grc.com/port_443.htm John McLeod VII was saying the 5.x clients use SSL for client-server communications and it's a fantastic idea, IMHO. Firewalls should not block port 443 by default but if for some god-forsaken reason it would, then open it. If closed, you'd never be able to do online banking, sign into your yahoo/netscape/google/aol web based email, or purchase items online from major vendors. And let me know the name of that particular firewall so I can never recommend it to any of my customers. :) Travis</blockquote> Well thanks for that; I understand the technology so I know what 443 is for. Like I said 443 is blocked by many organisations to prevent the very thing you talk about: online banking, spending their time buying on ebay/paypal whatever whatever when they should be at work. They do not want an employee claim against them in anyway so they block it so it can only be done at home / away from work equipment. They don't want employees doing private stuff in work time. Lots of reasons for an outfit to block it off. So if there is a move to SSL I think you may see a drop off in users. I thought SSL was going to be an option which is why I asked about *and* or *or* - quite frankly I don't see the need. Who wants to hack a result going back to UCB. I can see people sitting around moitoring and waiting for bank transactions to hack details from but LOL why would anyone do that for a seti WU. Nice to have a choice I would say but it cannot be mandatory surely. Oh and there is no particular firewall being talked about here - I was talking about configuration. |
