Ack Paul, but as volunteers, we get what we pay for, yes?

[edit]
It's not to say that we can't or shouldn't complain, but more to the point that we know that the complaints hotline is down due to project constraints, so don't expect any meaningful answers at the moment.

I've started another thread asking if there is any way to view the WUs.

Why do I get the feeling that you'd like to see the wu's, so that you can try and associate them with a user whom you may believe can be pressured into returning them faster?

I smell a witchhunt brewing. :(

I no longer micromanage my systems, I rely on the infrastructure to work as designed. Granted, in the early days under certain conditions (quite a few actually :) the infrastructure failed to work properly. Those days are pretty much history, rendering micromanaging unnecessary.

The system has worked well enough to date. If the project team thought there was a flaw, or the scientists were clammering for answers earlier, they may be inclined to address a perceived "problem".

IMHO, impatient users are not a problem and the system doesn't look broke...Does it really need fixing?

It is absolutely certain that a windows version will be along at some stage...

If you were referring to MC specifically, there already is one.

Your synopsis regarding the logical reason to choose one particular platform for development is apt, however not expanding the dev pool during alpha or beta phase can cause problems farther down the road. This is pretty much what we are seeing at MC at the moment.

Thankfully the devs are working on both the linux & win platforms simultaneously, so we have found the incompatibility pretty early. Had the devs chosen to go with a single platform, we wouldn't have identified the current issue of inter-platform incompatibility. If the problem was only tagged when adding a new platform into the production environment, many users would be crying foul over 0 credits...and the devs would have more headaches "fixing" credit and trying to salvage project credibility.

IMHO, it's unlikely that MC will be able to test every possible OS before going live, however catering for the majority is a reasonable 2nd place finish. Why test them all? Well, even something as simple as a single math function call into a shared library can return a slightly different result between two *nix OS's, linux & solaris for eg.

and, it seems from the url, allowing cern computers time and space to host the servers.

I may be wrong, but I think the production servers may be hosted elsewhere, with only the alpha setup on the CERN equipment while undergoing alpha testing.

There was mention of new servers and a new url for the beta, IIRC.

But it's definitely cool of the CERN guys to help get it started. They deserve a big pat on the back. ;->

This host hostid=58794 was corrupt. I did an update from the client and it fixed itself, except for the Average download rate, Average turnaround time and location. I could fix the location myself.

This host hostid=65945 was corrupt and I've just left it alone for the moment. I drained the work from it when I saw the bogus location data. I'll update it tomorrow in case you want to have a look at it for the moment.

Both running BOINC 4.45.

Admins, since my EMP wizardry appeared to fail, may I humbly request a wu quota of 15 per CPU be imposed on PB, with immediate effect. :)

(I know this belongs in the cafe, but starting another thread just wouldn't do. If anyone feels especially adverse to this innocent banter, please advise.)

grrr. You'll get yours. I'm a firm believer in "What goes around, comes around." ;-)

May all the EMP activity in your area accidentally get concentrated over your head.
<*<>8-> While you're scrambling for cover and replacement parts, we'll be eating up those wu's... just you wait... hehe.

Thanks for the update Chrulle.
I wish I could offer some suggestions, but I have no real ideas.

How do the Alpha results compare? I have NT box there returning results and only ask because win2k and winXp are supposedly built on NT technology...

Actually, I'm not bashing LHC or any LHC folks. It was just a simple two line comment ending with :) "a smile".

No, it can't and neither should it be, because we have all entered the "BOINClight zone..." (To the theme of The Twilight Zone).

It's the day after tomorrow, so there must have been some complications....

And this raises another interesting question: Is the lifetime of this project finite?

S@H has a reasonably infinite sky to scan, similarly E@H. CPDN can run models until hell freezes over. PP@H & F@H can analyse forever, but what happens to LHC@home once the LHC is built?

Wouldn't it be amusing if the "magnet control" is finalised before we get out of Beta? ;-)

Post:

Yes, it looks like it's not listening, and as jm7 noted, the reason is probably because something else was holding the port when BOINC started.

Try these to see what is listed:
# netstat -pl (will list all listening ports) (or an error if netstat can't be found)
# netstat -pl | grep -i 31416 (will list what is listening on port 31416)

BOINC 4.19 uses port 31416 IIRC...
18) Questions and Answers : Windows : Unable to connect to BOINC on a linux system via BOINC/BOINC View (Message 7408)
Posted 3 May 2005 by ralic
Post:
try:

# netstat -pl | grep -i boinc

This should list listening ports, and only print one line if boinc is running and listening.
The 4th column of the output should show '*:nnnn' where nnnn is the port on which boinc is listening, either 1043 or 31416.

That will help you determine if BOINC is running and listening for connections.

If it looks good, then take a look at your remote_hosts.cfg file in the boinc directory (on the linux box) and check that it is also okay and allows access from the XP client. If you make any changes to that file, then you must stop and start BOINC before they will take effect.

That's usually all that is needed to manage BOINC remotely.

Post an update if you're still stuck.
