Happy new year to all !

The farm has evolved as usual.
The most notable addition is a Poweredge 6850 running quad 2.66 MP xeons.
These are dual core hyperthreading.....so 16 threads.
Its not as fast as you would think....but it does have solid production.
The reality.....a new 5400 series quad core Xeon could probably outrun it.

Did Santa bring anyone else something shiny and new ?

I attached a few more multi core machines and they were able to get 1 or 2 work units.

But it does show the up/dl server as disabled.

bugger!

The farm has again been in-densified

Converted the Xeon 3.6 and Athlon MP systems into a
Dual Opteron 2218 system on a Asus L1N64 motherboard.
This system is already twice as fast as the Xeon 3.6 was and it uses a single 550watt PSU instead of dual 650's.
Running in a Koolance liquid cooled system the procs are at 95 degrees F .

I am looking forward to the release of the AMD quads cores.

I just setup a new Athlon MP at 1800+ mhz.....surpringly swift cruncher.
Also surprising is how the MP's hold their value on eBay.

The farm is now :
Dual Xeon C2Q x5355
C2Q q6700
C2Q q6600
2x C2D 6700
Dual Xeon 3.6
Dual Athlon MP 1800+
...and a smattering of others.

Sysfried.....Xeon 7110's.......Tulsa's ? Right ?
I have access to set of 7120's.....I would like to know more about your machine.
Please contact me.

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5355 @ 2.66GHz
Number of CPUs 8

.....only to think........whats gonna be fast in a year !

Brilliant.

Been selling the xeon farm to fund a new dual Xeon 5355 system.
Considering a single 5150 machine can do the work of 5 dual 2.8's combined,
it only makes sense to keep the power consumption down.
Out with last years technology...in with this months tech.
Procs and the FBdimms are in hand....motherboard will arrive today.
Just waiting on some clips from Koolance and this system will be on water.

Very interested to see how fast the new Opterons are !!

The farm is always growing new crops and system upgrades.

Out with systems that are single proc and in with the dual proc HT goodness.
I wish I could afford more of the quad core goodiees....but my Boincing habit requires me to ride the back of the tech wave.

I got to see a proc the other day with the word " octal " etched into it..........hrmmmm?

Got plenty of work on all my machines.
What is curious is how some machines may have gotten 20-30 wu's where as others received over a 100.
Or 3 machines that are exactly the same and one of them got about 10 times the wu's of the others.
It would make sense if for example, the quad core got 200 wu's and a P4 3.0HT got 20.

I know Einstien tries to send easier wu's to lesser machines and heavier wu's to bigger cpu'd systems, I have found this to be true, ymmv.

Happy to be crunchin !

I am so envious of that rack setup....those just so much better than a vertical setup like mine.
Since we seem to collect systems of various sizes and shapes.
they never fit into a typical 19" rack setup.
so then I have to butcher one into a 4u or 5u case in order get it into my APC Netshelter rack setup.

I nearly got a pair of those about a month ago for free.
Well nearly free....I had to load them up and transport.
But between work and a garage full of schtuff....I had no room for them.

very cool.

My farm has a new crop of Intels.....P4 3.73, P4 3.4 , Core2duo 2.66, Core2quad 2.66 !

Keeps the LHC's coming !

One might hope this in preparation to clear the shelves in anticipation of the 4x4 release.

Oh I agree.
I am kinda just waiting.
My dual core 4400 system is going to the farm.
It is being replaced with a new intel e6700 cpu based system.
By most estimates, it should be aboot 25% stronger.
I am strongly trying to trim down the farm to what can fit in the 42u rack I have.
It is hard to adhere to my new personal "system spec"
It has forced me to sell some really really nice systems.
I like the P3 systems, solid, robust, thermal tolerant, cheap and plentiful.
My proliant 8500 will be my only exception.....for a while.

....now if I could just find some LHC wu's to crunch !!!

A sad day out in boinc farm today.
My favourite uber geek 8 proc system has been sold.

It was a Intel Sabre with 8 each Xeon 550mhz cpus with 2mb of L2 cache.
Interesting how some of the newest processors are finally getting big L2's.
It has be running boinc solid since the day I got it, mostly Einsteins lately.

It was sold to good home and it will be well fed and cared for.

Now this opens up a slot in my rack for something faster.
Maybe something more productive and hopefully lower electrical consumption.
Maybe a new quad core AMD ...... ya ... thats the ticket.

The wife has been complaining about the $200 electrical bills.
This system has dual 1100 watt power supplies !!!

The idea of contributing to a physical science is what really appealed to me.
I also enjoy the myraid of comparisions aboot what hardware is better at crunching.
The appeal of joining with other like minded fahzools working for a common goal.
Trying to keep my BOINC farm at 12 machines yet always upgrading or increasing the geek factor of my systems.
*If this is to be considered a hobby....then how many hobbies do you get do 24/7....even when your not at home.

Peace.

The Proliant 8500 was rescued from certain destruction.
The battery was flat and so any system configs are lost whenever its powered down or restarted, so it was sent out for recycling.
I worked on it for about 5 minutes, swapped in a new battery and its running great.

137 pounds of 'puter!
8 550mhz Xeons, 1mb L2 cache, 4 gigs PC100 ECC system ram, 4 10k 9gig drives in Raid 5.
It does Einsteins in about 40 hours.
The Proliant is a touch slower than the Intel Sabre.
This is due to the L2 cache at 1mb, its about %15 slower.
I really want to get a set of 900's but I have yet to confirm if this specific system is capable of supporting them.
If not....I will get a set of 550's with 2mb L2.

Also recently added 4 Dell 2550's and a Dell 2500.
These are all Dual P3 1 ghz (socket 370).
The 2500 is capable of running the 1.4mhz processors, so eventually it will be upgraded.
I want to keep the 2500 as a file server/web host for the house.
The 2550's need PERC raid keys and then I will sell those($100), but for now I will crunch with them.

Everything is mounted in a server cabinet with a 24 port hub and HP 8 port KVM.
This is all running on a 30amp breaker and at 240volts.
Previously I had them just stacked around my garage and on my bench.
I had been searching and searching for one that was cheap.
Not wanting to pay hundreds of dollars for used rack, I traded some deck repair labour for a HP server rack.

I do plan on getting some pictures up on the i'net or maybe I should finally get busy setting up the web page for my company.

Hopefully LHC will have a big run soon, but untill then its Einstein!

A new addition to the farm.

Compaq Proliant 8500.

This unit is currently sporting a set of 550mhz Xeons with 1 meg of L2.

Soon enough I will populate this monstrosity with 900 mhz Xeons.....2mb L2 !!
