Post:
Videos of the talks from the 2021 BOINC Workshop are now available on YouTube. Day 01 includes a talk giving an overview of LHC@home and Day 02 has another talk which provides more details on the specific technology we use. There are many other interesting talks from the other BOINC projects and from the BOINC developers.
42) Message boards : CMS Application : A Heads Up for Vbox Extension Pack Users (Message 44719)

Post:
I am not qualified to offer any legal opinion, however since the license change, the LHC@home project no longer recommends or requires the installation of the extension pack. The decision to install it depends on your understanding of the license and your own personal circumstances.

Just to confirm CP's message, the VirtualBox extension pack is not required to run the payloads.

First of all I have edited the title. I understand the complaint but please don't do the same thing that is being complained about.

As far as I understand LHC@home uses BOINC-wide teams so this is a BOINC-wide issue. The following page which may or may not be outdated says to contact David Anderson directly regarding disputes over team names, so I would suggest that the complaint is raised directly with him. I have sent a polite message to the team founder who I hope will change the name. I will also be raising this at the next BOINC phone conference to understand the procedure in more detail.
45) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : How is virtualization support determined? (Message 42614)
Posted 25 May 2020 by Profile Laurence
Post:
From the host details page, is looks like virtualization is detected. I think the issue is how it reports the platform.

x86_64-pc-freebsd vs x86_64-pc-linux-gnu

I have added a new platform for the Theory app. Please let me know if that works for you.

A failed execution of a Theory job does not fail the BOINC task. The output of the failed job is sent back to MCPlots and the job is not re-run. You can see the failed jobs in MCPlots.

Thanks. I forgot to updated the native version. Done now.

This new version will consider failed jobs as successful from a BOINC perspective. This means that the error output will be returned to the MCPlots server for further analysis and they will not be re-run on other hosts.
55) Message boards : Theory Application : 196 (0x000000C4) EXIT_DISK_LIMIT_EXCEEDED - how come? (Message 41248)

Three tasks in this workunit: https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/workunit.php?wuid=130540238
1st EXIT_DISK_LIMIT_EXCEEDED https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/result.php?resultid=259086785
2nd aborted by client https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/result.php?resultid=259092479
3rd Valid cause I increased the rsc_disk_bound from 2000000000 to 8000000000 in my client_state.xml

Could an admin increase that setting for rsc_disk_bound server-side? It will increase the number of successes and avoid wasting CPU-cycles.

Done

My suggestion would be to calculate it based on <p_ncpus> which is already included in the client's scheduler request.

It was already limited to 2 tasks per p_npcpus but also had a maximum limit of 10. I have removed that maximum limit.

I thought nT was in production but it's limited to a fearful 10 WUs per rig. Because of the RAM-hungry ATLAS WUs I have to run ST to fill out my threads. I think BOINC runs best with fewer projects but stuck with running three now.

How many per rig should we increase it to?

okay, I just thought that everything is okay now, since all went well for almost a week. But probably not so.
Perhaps Ivan could tell us more about the current situation.

Sorry this was my fault. I switched off a server that I thought we were no longer using and it looks like we are using it for the test. I have restarted it and will update the test.

I am wondering how they handle these in-house. Do they let them go forever? Probably not. In fact, I am wondering whether they do them at all. Maybe they just throw them over the wall to us. (Though not to me. I am out of Theory.)

In our internal batch system we have Job Flavours, job limits that are up to 1 week. Failures can be as scientifically valuable as success. See the Michelson–Morley experiment.

It also looks like VirtualBox is dropping support for 32bit hosts.
"Please also use version 5.2 if you still need support for 32-bit hosts, as this has been discontinued in 6.0. Version 5.2 will remain supported until July 2020."[/quote]
