Hi all,
apologies for the late reply.

Most of our users are analysing the simulation results, and making up their mind on the next steps.
One of our users has been submitting short tasks (10^5 turns jobs), and he should be submitting longer jobs (10^6 turns) before the end of the week, filling all the buffers.

Thanks a lot for your support!
Happy crunching,
Alessio

Hi Geoff Harmer,
what replied by AuxRx is correct - I will add that the presently active SixTrack users are analysing the results you have produced and deciding the next batch of submission. Thanks for your time and CPUs!
Happy crunching,

yes, we did not have enough in the buffer to cover the entire Christmas break.
one of our users resumed submission at the beginning of January - production of SixTrack results is back to full-steam, we are now filling our buffers.
Happy crunching!

Hi,
I just remind that SixTrack tasks are CPU-intensive only (with some use of the HD for C/R), with very limited bandwidth requirements and negligible internet access - just to download input files (typically <1MB) or upload results (typically <100kB), no 24/7 access.
Cheers,
A.
5) Message boards : Sixtrack Application : Server Status (Message 40990)
Posted 17 Dec 2019 by Alessio Mereghetti
Post:
Hi,
apologies for the wrong number of tasks in the queue - this was due to tasks in the BOINC DB orphans of their WUs due to a WU deletion back in summer.
I have just cleared them out - at the next server status update, you should see that the sixtrack queue has been drained out.
Thanks for spotting this,
Cheers,
A.

Post:
Hi Ray,
yes you are right. But this batch of 10^7 turns jobs were submitted (wrongly) to sixtrack instead of sixtracktest, with the default of 1w of delay bound. On sixtracktest we have presently 2w.
But it would have been not respectful towards those users with hosts capable of crunching the tasks on time which have already started crunching them, or even producing results. Hence, I let them go...
I will remind the users to load sixtracktest and not sixtrack for this kind of studies.
Happy crunching,
Cheers,

Post:
Hi,
sorry for the late reply. Recently we had some changes on the SixTrack app, but everything was before uploading work to the BOINC server.
On the server side, the only change was the update of the estimation of the host speed - which is done now for all hosts (no longer only 1) which have provided valid results, for which all particles survive. I do not think that this update can have an affect on the
avg_ncpus
parameter.

Both my Ubuntu hosts (running only sixtrack and sixtracktest) do not have a
app_config.xml
file, and all the places where
avg_ncpus
is set, it is always set to 1.
I can check also a windows machine of mine, but I don't have access right now...

Post:
Hi Sesson,
apologies for that. Yes, you are right, the deadline of 7 days is too tight for this kind of studies, and at submission this parameter was left behind.
Please feel free to abort any of these tasks or temporarily detach your laptop from SixTrack for let's say a week.
Thanks for your understanding,
Cheers,
A.

Hi Ray,
thanks for pointing this out, good catch.
Yes, all the tasks pin v5.02.07, which has only Mac exes.
I am plugging in Win/Lin 64 bit exes, just to enlarge the parterre of volunteers and crunch this wave of tasks faster.
You should be able to get tasks soon.

Hi,
thanks for pointing those hosts out - very precious and careful job!

The first guy seems to have resume regular activity:

The other one:
https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/results.php?hostid=10614261
is still in an error phase, probably related to issues with their network - I will contact the owner privately.

Thanks a lot in advance,

13) Message boards : Sixtrack Application : Are there FreeBSD SSE2 apps available for FreeBSD? (Message 40329)
Posted 30 Oct 2019 by Alessio Mereghetti
Post:
What I am sure about is that:
1. we did compile SixTrack for FreeBSD, both with avx and sse2 instruction sets;
2. we did put the executables in the BOINC DB for distribution and use.
Both of them can be found on the apps page:
https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/apps.php

With the statistics on your host presently available, your host did run 3 tasks with FreeBSD - I cannot claim that your host is running the FreeBSD app right now, as there might be some latency in all the update operations of the BOINC DB.
https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/host_app_versions.php?hostid=10571128

At the time of writing, I do see you have 2 tasks in progress, both with a FreeBSD exe:
https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/result.php?resultid=250082076
https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/result.php?resultid=250091388

I am not sure you will be able to check the exe of these two tasks right now due to the difference in time zone between you and the project.
Nevertheless, to better understand the issue, could you please point me to a case where you find a linux exe for a task which is recorded in the BOINC DB as to be run with the FreeBSD exe?
You should find the task name in both the init_data.xml and boinc_task_state.xml files - e.g. one of mine:
$ grep -ir result 1
1/fort.6:BEAM> tical results to this one.
1/fort.6:BEAM> the standard output in a text diff tool like meld. If the results are not identical,
1/init_data.xml:<result_name>workspace1_hl14_HighResNominal_B1__15__s__62.31_60.32__4.2_4.3__6__31_1_sixvf_boinc216889_1</result_name>
1/boinc_task_state.xml: <result_name>workspace1_hl14_HighResNominal_B1__15__s__62.31_60.32__4.2_4.3__6__31_1_sixvf_boinc216889_1</result_name>

Thanks a lot in advance,

14) Message boards : Sixtrack Application : Are there FreeBSD SSE2 apps available for FreeBSD? (Message 40309)
Posted 29 Oct 2019 by Alessio Mereghetti
Post:
Hi,
thanks for the question. Yes, we have a genuine sse2 FreeBSD executable:
https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/apps.php
and your computer did use it:
https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/results.php?hostid=10571128

The stats suffer from too few tasks being crunched (both with sse2 and avx) for different reasons:
https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/host_app_versions.php?hostid=10571128
In one case you had very short tasks, simulating a very unstable beam, hence they are not used to update the performance of the exe on your host. For the other exe, the tasks look like fully stable beam, hence making the performance estimate of the exe sensible; nevertheless, no validation has taken place yet - and we need to validate results first before updating figures on performance.

Concerning the users with FreeBSD without Linux compatibility layer, I guess they will get the true FreeBSD exes. Do you want to switch it off and git a trial to the setup?

Hope it helps,
Cheers,
A.

17) Message boards : Sixtrack Application : Very long Tasks (Message 40115)
Posted 10 Oct 2019 by Alessio Mereghetti
Post:
The issue with those tasks has been addressed here:
https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/forum_thread.php?id=4690

We had a problem with the setting up of a bunch of simulations with 1^7 turns, and a log file was eating up all the disk quota.
The user was not aware that sixtrack was producing that log file, and how to update the request.
Hence, I have decided to manually attribute credit to those tasks based on the CPU time via the --credit_from_runtime option of the BOINC validator.
I should have also given credit to your tasks, but I had a malformed query to the DB - now everything should be properly set, and you should see credit to those tasks.

Thanks a lot in advance,
Happy cruncing,
A.

Hi Yeti,

I am checking with the IT guys how your host is treated by the BOINC server looking at the cgi/feeder logs.
We will come back to you once we have news.
Thanks,
