Dear All;
The following questions are open:

why don\'t you do a survey?
on the forum or via mail.
this could make clear which are the most importent problems.

dear lhc@homers,

yes it was a nice project. (a beautiful project)
and yes lhc did have it\'s publicity stunt.

now it seems to be over.

we are not a herd with cpu\'s. we have a choice.
just find other projects for your very hungry cpu\'s

and yes, follow the news about lhc. it must be interesting to all of us.

after reading this all.....

is it not the question then, is this the end of lhc@home?
the work gets done on GRID.
which might be a smart choice, i have no comment on that.

CERN made a smart publicity move with lhc@home.
but with the LHC running soon and GRID lhc@home might be obsolete?

this is a choice CERN will make.

if this is the case then just pull the plug on lhc@home.
don't keep us waiting for nothing.
4) Questions and Answers : Sixtrack : Aborted by the project (Message 20960)

Post:
They\\\\\\\'ve been automatically deleted. :)

I have 3 tasks that are 100%
completed. Finished 6 days early
and the project aborted them.

finished results get reported normally.
i want to know why the \"aborted by project\" happens.
why is there not a line in the boinc message box with some explanation?

and why are there so many questions in the \"questions and answers\" section. and so very very few answers?

5) Message boards : Cafe LHC : where can i order my free black hole? (Message 20048)
Posted 9 Sep 2008 by bass4lhc
Post:
as i understand lhc is going to make a massive amount of black holes. and you have no use for them.

so i want one for free.

my computers did some work for lhc@home. i feel i have the right to my very own black hole.

so, where can i order my free black hole?

(btw, i hope hawkins still gets his nobel price)

so we all want to donate cpu time to science.

being a donator does not give you a right to wu's.

helping science should be fast. it should not be slowed down by donators who are demanding wu's.

donate as much as you can.

ok, i am not a forum person.
but changing the subject is not helping.

there was a situation where there was work which was not send. my first message.

then we go to boinc farms and something like "fair" placement of wu's. quota's,
even server updates.

please start your own thread.

@neasan&alex, this is your board, you have the power to keep it clean. i like to donate cpu time to lhc. i also would like to be taken a bit more seriously.

btw. i do not have a boinc farm.

I'm not sure what your complaint is. You raised a concern, which Neasan answered here. Then the discussion evolved into a conversation on whether the admins' methods made sense. What else were you expecting to happen? Your concern was addressed, and then posters decided to explore the subject further. I don't think anyone failed to take you seriously - it's just that once your question was dealt with, the conversation moved on. BTW, this is pretty much how most threads go in this and other BOINC forums, so you shouldn't feel neglected. It's just kind of the way it goes. One idea leads to another, which leads to another, etc. That's the nature of discussion forums. If you don't feel you were taken seriously, you should probably re-read the thread, as it all pretty much relates to why there were WUs sitting there, ready to go, but not being sent.

Cheers.

dear picantecomputing,

my question/concern is not dealt with at all. there was a reply, not an answer. the explanation was (your favorite animal here)shit.

i don't mind discussions to evolve. i do mind not getting an answer and discussions that move away from a not dealt with topic.

Don't blame yourself; what he said indeed doesn't make much sense...

Actually, if I'm interpreting their intentions correctly, holding back WUs until there are lots to go around actually makes quite a bit of sense. [......]So, yes, we have to wait - but I think it's ultimately better for everyone this way. Unless my logic is flawed.

i'm sorry, but yes i think your logic is flawed.
it's not that difficult, if you have more cpu's you get more wu's.
if there are 10 wu's 9 go to boinc farms.
if there are 1000 wu's 900 or more go to boinc farms.
holding back wu's makes no difference.

who cares, we all want to donate to science.
this is not a problem. more cpu's is good boinc-wise.

there are so many boinc projects to keep your cpu busy.

information from the projects we donate to would be nice however. (hint to lhc)

It is not a problem any more. We are holding the jobs because we hope to get more very soon so you'll have even more to crunch.

i am sorry, i am not a very smart human.
but this is like: i will not eat this week because there might be more food next week.

even stupid me doesn't understand this.

again there is work but no cpu-time donator can get it.

i have been watching this for a few hours. (i am not a fulltime boinc watcher) :)

but if this happens 3 times in a row i don't think this is a coincidence anymore.

and yes, in a few hours you will tell: there was a problem but now work is flowing and it all went while we were watching. we hope you got some.

why not just tell what is going on?

i truly like to donate my cpu time to this project.
i don't think i get informed on what is going on. boinc-wise that is.

with only 25 wu's out in the field there must be something very wrong on the server.

Ok - I've had enough of this.

I made a single post wishing you all well, and gave as my reason for departing as the poor state of the project.

Since then I seem to have been turned into the devil incarnate beacuse I 'whinge and moan', because I 'post a dummy spit', because I 'hate the project', blah, blah, blah...

my conclusion is not the same as this naked person.
but let us give him credit, he has a point. there is no information.

we all know workunits are only sometimes available.
but information should be allways available.

with timely information this cruncher could have been kept onboard.

information on the site every 2 or 3 months is not the way to keep your crunchers. it should at least be weekly.

I contacted Ben Segal this morning about the database problems. He's the LHC@Home project manager. He responded within an hour, but he's now waiting for one of the techies to get on to it.

On the plus side, CERN know about the problems.

On the minus side, they have no dedicated resource to fix them.

Sorry...

mike, thanks for your post. i am sure we all understand the problem.

this does however not change my complaint, there is simply no information. once every 6 weeks some minor new info on the site is the same as no info at all. we donate our time. the time ben segal took to answer you could have been used to answer us all.

[quote]...I am extremely concerned regarding the lack of support for this project from within the CERN organisation...

Ack Paul, but as volunteers, we get what we pay for, yes?

no, we donate. which makes us donators. therefore we do not get what we pay for. and yes, we donate voluntarily, you might see the difference.

the lack of info from lhc is almost shoking.

@ philip martin kryder: we know this project, we are not complaning about the lack of work. as you can see, we like this project, so i think we will stay.
(i do not know the gas giant, maybe i can just read better what he is saying.)

i had a nasty power outage in my part of "my" city.

did a lot of work this evening to get my systems up again. one died unfortunately.

most af them are crunching again, and one of these has a strange problem. the return time of the wu's is set to 1901.

i can ajust a clock and so on. i will do these wu's and report them, i probably have lost some as well.

just to let lhc know
