i think it is a pity intel isn't pushing the itanium more into the mainstream market but rather stick to a 20+ year old technology (x86) that have lots of caveeats (IMO) like A20 gate and lots of other things just to stay compatible... i personally would be happy to break compatibility for the sake of a new architecture without all the old junk...




Hopefully now that both AMD and Intel are starting to introduce multicore processors they will be able to develop a new architecture while saving a x86 core to handle legacy applications.
