I think S@H has trained people to be paranoid. They've started hording WUs to keep their machines busy during the frequent outages.

This is simply unnecessary now if you attach to multiple projects. Especially if you attach to CPDN. It's totally feasible now to run a small cache and always have plenty of work to do. :)

They are one and the same. The S@H team developed (is developing) BOINC.

Thanks John. :)

You can also tell them it does more than copy the name. It starts downloading files into different projects folders. (after hijacking the name)

When it first happened to me, I also looked at the client_state.xml and it looked like the project name was the only thing affected. I manually renamed S@H (which thought it was Pirates) and thought all was good. Then when S@H tried to return a result, I got an error saying it couldn't recognize the app version. So all might not be well, have you returned any results?

Pirates is a test bed for Einstien@Home.

There are posts on the S@H board as well. Like this one that even links to this thread. How close they watch the boards I couldn't say...

I've been attached to my six original projects now for almost 4 1/2 hours, and all seems good.

I really think it had something to do with LHCs connection problems. When it was occurring, BOINC would try to contact LHC and basically hang the client for a couple minutes waiting for a reply. No other projects could communicate when this happened. A manual update would do nothing. (first thing I tried when S@H thought it was Pirates)

I am just astonished that it could happen. I would have thought such a thing would be an obvious issue to safeguard.

I got another Pirates as well, but tried changing the project name back in the client_state.xml. I thought it worked, but when trying to report a result back to S@H, it couldn't recognize the app version, even though it was correct in the c_s.xml file.

So I restored a four day old c_s.xml file and reset Pirates and S@H. (the apparent projects with issues) Then within an hour, all six of the projects I'm attached to thought they were LHC!

I restored the older file again and detached from LHC, and reset the other projects. All is functioning well at this point. (it might be worthwhile to know that LHC was having major connection issues at the time)

I'm attached again to LHC since others were reporting things seemed to be functioning again. All seems normal, but this hiccup trashed over 200 hours of work for CPDN alone. More counting the other projects.

I suspect the problem was with LHC, (because the connection issues started right before the first problem arose) but I'm somewhat appalled that cross project havoc can be wreaked in this manner... There needs to be checks in place to insure this can not happen again.

I don't think Pirates had anything to do with it, even though the first symptom I saw was S@H thinking it was Pirates.

I restored a 4 day old client_state.xml file and started again, within an hour or so, LHC was listed as all six projects I'm attached to! I restored the older file again and detached from LHC. All was good.

I'm attached to LHC again and all seems good, but I'd like to hear from the project leaders what was up. I lost over 200 hours worth of work for CPDN. I don't mind if a beta project has issues within the project, but if the mayhem can span projects, that's not cool at all...

LHC appears to be wiping out all other projects. I reverted to a 4 day old client_state.xml file and detached from LHC, all is cool.

I noticed too.

When S@H started doing this, it tanked shortly after. I wonder if LHC is about to go down?
