1) Questions and Answers : Preferences : Why can't I get any work? (Message 18379)

"If you don't want me in this project, just say so"

Why did you find it necessary to post your entire message file four times? If you don't want to play nicely please go and play elsewhere.

You are having a great time playing Big Brother Teaching, or.... :(

If You do not want to be friendly and helpful, then go somewhere else...

He is not the only frustrated user, so it seems that the Project, or You has got a problem.

My BOINC has been set to dedicate 50% to LHC, but for the last 14 days I have been asked to wait. Last time I was told to wait another 30 hours, before checking for work again.

Now, finally there is work units to get, but guess what Mr. Einstein.

My request for work was turned down, it says:

Daily quota of 8 units exceeded????

Please note: I haven't done a single unit for more than a year.

Mark my words, this is not the first time. We are now writing the 26th of October, and the problem still exists.

The Gurus of this project is not listening, but let people like You do the dirty work and scare users away.

Seems that You have it all in Your mouth/keyboard, not in Your brain.

On Jan 26 LHC had a database crash, and it should now be fixed and the base is up again...
Well, not quite :(
21 of my results are lost.
They have been returned according to my log, but tomorrow the time limit is up, and the results are not listed.
I haven´t checked, but does my computer save a copy of the results or are they deleted when sent?
I am, of course, thinking about the posibility of making the computer resend the missing answers.

Info anybody?

Thanks and have a nice week-end

FYI

Feature has been disabled for some days due to server overload, but is now operational again :)

Post:

Greetings Christian.

Sorry, if I caused Your tension to go up a bit, but my alert is withdrawn and I can see from Your post that I was right in my assumption that some code was to blame.

I have now run the exact same wu on 4 of my computers using the following processors: XP1800+, XP2800+, XP3000+ and P3Mobile.

All results match to the bit. :)

(Regrettably I don't own a P4, I am itching to see how much the results differ..)

This at least proves that my computers agree on what result to get. Now I know that I do not have a faulty processor, RAM-Block, Heat-problems, etc.

While I have the 'You on the line':

Are the results useable?

It botheres me to think that my work may be for the garbish-can only. (I hope not :))

If You think it is a good idea, I will post as a new topic, how I went about making the test.

Here is how:
Watch the BOINC work-screen, wait until one WU is just 2 minutes from completing. (Make sure You still have WU's ready to process in Your cache ;))Exit BOINC and ZIP the entire BOINC.DIR (preserve paths) and save it as WU-TEST.ZIP.
De-activate Your Network and restart BOINC and wait for the next complete WU to finish.
Stop BOINC and locate the result-file and make a copy to somewhere safe.
Re-enable Your Network and BOINC starts sending the result.
The saved result is our reference file. Rename to say RESULT-ref.txt.

To test a machine:
Exit BOINC and rename the BOINC-dir to BOINC-ORG.
Unzip WU-TEST-ZIP preserving paths.
De-activate Network and start boinc.
Now the new machine carries on from the frozen moment. In 2 mins it will start crunching the same 'Test' WU.
Wait for it to finish and exit BOINC.
Save the result, naming it something easy to remember, f.eks the name of the machine.
Delete the BOINC dir.
Enable Network.
Rename the BOINC-ORG dir back to BOINC and start Boinc.

Apart from the time used to test, Your work will continue without problems.

Now You can compare the 2 result-files and hopefully they match.

A much better idea is a LHC Approved Testprogram cosisting of a small shell, a copy of sixtrack and a 100,000 turn WU. Include the correct result and the alowed slack.

If users wonder why their results does not get credited or if they think their equipment may be faulty, they can just run the test and see if they have problems.

This test could also serve as a benchmark. (I know that a lot of crunchers want to see just how fast their computer is compared to other participants').

What do You think?

Danish stuff:

Undskyld!

6) Questions and Answers : Windows : All the results of my computer are invalid (Message 2849)
Posted 30 Sep 2004 by Profile ChrisD
Post:
Greetings Friend.

Have You checked which of Your computers has processed the invalidated results?

If You look at my thread just above, I am having the problem that my AMD processor obviously produces slightly different results compared to an Intel P4 Processor.

Now the 10,000 $ question is, Which Processor can't do math? :-)

I am almost certain, that if a WU is passed to 2 AMD's and one Intel P4, it is going to be the P4 that may see its result invalidated.

EDIT:

I just checked the last WU on Your list. 2 Results are returned for the WU, 1 from a Pentium 4 and one from an AMD!
The remaining host is a Celeron, so beat me on this one: If Intel has made the innards of their Celerons and P4 similar, Your result is going to be rejected as You are the only AMD.

ChrisD

Would You be interested in checking the problem out in private?
I have an idea to check the problem, but I do not have a P4.

Post:
Just checking my Work, and found 3 results that has been invalidated:

WUID's
111187
137756
123645

Every time investigation shows that the two other hosts are Pentium 4 equipped computers. I run an Athlon XP 3000.

Please check this problem out.

It is not the credits that bother me, but if my results are invalid, my computer is not helping You, is it?

You need valid and reliable results in order to calibrate Your magnets, and if I am only producing trash, I may as well spare my Electricity.

ChrisD

I have 35 results pending. As they become invalidated, I'll append to this thread.
