I think a solution that the project could do is to decrease the daily quota.

I can see it now all those super crunchers complaining that they have hit the daily limit (refer to the wailing and gnashing of teeth about the curse of 32 over at Einstein) and how its slowing down the science having their machines sitting dry. It's not fair that their super machines are being penalised because they are too fast.

Whichever way you cut it, slice it or dice it, the work is sporadic someone somewhere will always run out of work before someone else.

how do you know that the "hoarders" didn't have a "proper" reason such as a slow modem or dial up line?

or an older machine, or one that doesn't crunch 24/7?

No offence intended. This was a gentle dig aimed at the 'credit-racers', of whom you claim you're not one. But judging by your sensitivity to it I'd guess that you are 'racing' more than you let on.

You're obviously not "in it" for the credits, so what does it matter how many hoops someone else jumps through to get work?

Personally, I can't be bothered micro-managing BOINC, my cache is set to .1 (except the pc's at work where they only crunch and connect after hours and the cache is set to .5)with a resource share of 1000 the other projects I crunch for have a resource share of 100 or less.

I'm in it for the credits, but if credits/hour was all that I was chasing then I'd stick to Einstein with an Akos app, and be whining about the lack of wu's.

No offence intended, but maybe you're more interested in credits than you like to let on, afterall if you're only interested in the science what's the problem, the wu's are getting crunched ie. the science is getting done.

The server has a problem that I don't quite understand because it does not happen with any of the other projects that I am attached to. Every time my boinc client asks for more work from LHC a new host is spawned. Everyday I have a long list of host that I need to merge. If this is happenning to other people that could explain some of the other problems the server is having.

Same here, are you using BAM at all, and is it only affecting your linux boxes?

Just using windows xp on the regular boxes and 03enterprise on the Sabre 8 xeon server.

I figure I am just to lazy to try something better.
I do wonder if some version of Linux would be a "faster" OS to be running on the Sabre.
I also wonder if it would take more advantage of some of servers 64 bit architecture and increase the BOINC throughput.

Linux vs. 03 enterprise ?

Also a few new additions to the farm.

Dual 2.4 mhz Xeon HT (603) system.

Dual 2.8 mhz Xeon HT (604) system.....water cooled by Koolance !

I don't know if linux would be faster, but under the current system of credits being tied to benchmarks linux claims lower credit than windows (on the same box).

What tools do you use to administer BOINC on these boxes?

BTW, nice additions.

It is not that the admin do not care, but very often they know that there are new WU exactly the same way you do. By the number going up on the frontpage. The submission system is completely automated and the physicist that is submitting most of the work is in Canada. So even if he remembers to send an email saying he is putting up more work, the admins will probably have gone home. You should also remember that there is no full time admin at the moment.

But summer is soon here, so a bunch of summerstudents will be arriving soon. I am sure one of them will be put to work on the Boinc system, and will have some spare time to do some sys-admining.

OK, I've been around BOINC long enough to KNOW how it works, you should know that azwoody. All I'm asking is that we get an update from the project people on the status of what is happening with the LHC@Home project if there has been no work for a while. Things like, will there be new work and in the expected time frame. It's just a courtesy that I'd like to think we could get from a professional crew who treat their volunteers like assets and not the commodity that we really are, is all!

Live long and crunch.

And if that answer is unknown what message would you like them post?

Reading through the website the LHC@Home project is only one facet of the computational solutions available to the CERN scientists, ie just one of many resources to be exploited.

does anybody know if there is a newsletter, that is sent automatically once there is new work available? Either from lhc@home or from some team out there? Checking mail is easier for me than returning to the site each day. In periods of no work I usually disable work requests in BOINC and then it happens that I'm too late to get some work ;)

What's the benefit of setting LHC to no new work?

Cheers Falcon Fly, thanks for such a detailed reply. The smart install options, with packages grouped by function sound like a good idea. It's always good to hear the "why" behind what others are using.

I'm pretty much sticking with Fedora Core since Rel. 3 now, but there are a few other (older) Linuxes remaining that I never changed since they do the job as well.

Any particular reason why you've settled on Fedora? Does fedora have benefits over other distros for running boinc?

Just wondering what software everyone uses on their farms and why.

My main box runs xp and boincview, and at home my crunchers are headless and are only used for crunching so I've installed damn small linux on them with x0vncserver. I chose dsl because it's a minimal distro, if you can't run dsl on your box with full gui then it won't run boinc, and it'll run on old boxes too(486dx2 with 16meg). Boinc runs automatically on startup in gui mode, and I can vnc into xwindows display 0 for any maintenance - I've been spoiled by windows and avoid the command line wherever possible.

At work the boxes all run xp with boinc installed as a service, again I use boincview to manage the crunching.

Nice newsletter.

Wouldn't have looked at it but for MM's post in the B@A Forums :-)

The other strategy for farms is to have one project on all your boxes. That project then serves to propagate the CPID across all projects.

I would recommend XtremLab for such a task (with a resource share of 1)

I like the idea of the RealVNC or with boinc view.....

But , as we all know, some machines wont post without a mouse or at least a keyboard plugged in.
I know that some BIOS's will have a setting to allow for this, or some systems will have a jumper on the mobo to allow it to boot without mouse or KB .

Plus....i kinda like checking up on the machines and twiddling with them directly.

You know your a geek when you replace your toys with computers and servers and networking schtuff.

I could be wrong but I think the keyboard/mouse requirement is os based (windows for one). I have 4 boxes that run on linux with no keyboard, mouse or monitor, all of varying vintages.

I tried going in and deleting the partial download but it stopped again at 29% downloaded.A project reset did not work either.

This is true - two machines which did run LHC before are chugging through them. The other six are stuck on this file, all at 29%.

I have three boxes all happily crunching new wu's. Two had previously crunched the third was a virgin. One box had the following messages in its log (the other two didn't)

15/01/2006 1:15:51 AM File logo_back_1.01_.tga exists already, skipping download

15/01/2006 1:15:54 AM File tubeInside_1.09_.tga exists already, skipping download

My suggestion is find these files on one of your boxes that is working and copy them to the boxes that are hanging. (Stop boinc running first on the target).

It looks like they are required for the graphics in the screensaver, ie nothing to do with the wu getting crunched.

It should work, but no guarantees. ;)

Hi Cxing

LHC is currently out of work, hence the message "no work from project". The last update on the home page is that new work units will be created and issued sometime after Christmas 2005.

LHC's work is released in blocks as they get to each new stage of the project.
