Screensaver Question

Posted 5 Oct 2011 by Ageless Post: See http://lhcathomeclassic.cern.ch/sixtrack/forum_thread.php?id=3249, wherein Igor Zacharov writes: SixTrack is a computational program... Part of our problems in the past was related to bugs in the graphics part, which hampered the advance of the computation. Therefore, we have decided to cut the graphics off completely. |

screensaver/graphics bug
(Message 23356)
Posted 5 Oct 2011 by Ageless Post: SixTrack is a computational program... Part of our problems in the past was related to bugs in the graphics part, which hampered the advance of the computation. Therefore, we have decided to cut the graphics off completely. The previous incarnation of the science program had the graphics section built in. With BOINC 6 the intent is to separate the graphics from the science program, have them be built separately and run separately. That way the graphics may still take up (quite) some CPU, but the user can change the preference for that in his project preferences (Maximum CPU % for graphics 0 ... 100). If you as a project set that default to 10%... |

Can't set resource to zero
(Message 23355)
Posted 5 Oct 2011 by Ageless Post: Yup, [trac]changeset:20286[/trac] is well within the version claimed to be used here: Server software version: 22168. 20286 was the first entry in BOINC SVN that enabled zero resource share. As far as I know, the project doesn't need to enable this. |

Too low credits granted in LHC

Posted 4 Oct 2011 by Ageless Post: I doubt he can do anything he wants as, no doubt, the University of California owns all rights to BOINC. BOINC is free software, distributed under the Lesser General Public License (LGPL), version 3 or later. The University of California holds the copyright on all BOINC source code. By submitting contributions to the BOINC code, you irrevocably assign all right, title, and interest, including copyright and all copyright rights, in such contributions to The Regents of the University of California, who may then use the code for any purpose that it desires. I wonder what conditions the US government placed on the BOINC development grants. There may be requirements that it is open source, available to all. If he changed BOINC to be proprietary, he may lose those funds. BOINC is supported by the National Science Foundation through awards SCI-0221529, SCI-0438443, SCI-0506411, PHY/0555655, and OCI-0721124. Too low credits granted in LHC
(Message 23307)
Posted 1 Oct 2011 by Ageless Post: I got an answer back, those devs never sleep it seems. ;-) CreditNew is always on, by default. It can be disabled, but that requires some hacking of the server code. There is also an alternative credit option, but this is for projects that use a nonstandard notion of job, used by e.g. CERN's Test4Theory that runs through a virtual machine. |

(Message 23292)
Posted 29 Sep 2011 by Ageless Post: It's called "Credit system as of 5/2010" in BOINC software development. You can also check out CreditProposal, which has a lot more possibilities, which not necessarily will be added. Seeing how this project is running SSV22168, it has CreditNew (22168 is 9 August 2010). Whether or not it's activated, that's another thing. |

One of those WU's http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/workunit.php?wuid=1892389 Actually, you're claiming, from the top one to the bottom one, 0.00233318497995638, 0.00408711093157513 and 0.00235602975402844 credit. You had three very fast tasks, of less than a second to slightly over a second. If you check the workunit IDs, you see that everyone claimed so little credit for those tasks. |

Posted 9 Nov 2007 by Ageless Post: I noticed the extra text, I don't know where the 4.65 comes from. Could be the internal version number of the Sixtrack application, even though it says it used 4.66 And there's the difference, you're the only one on Linux who crunched that one. The rest who got credit were using Windows XP. I don't know if LHC uses homogeneous redundancy on its tasks, but if they do, that means you can wait till eternity for two other Linux machines to crunch that one. Otherwise it's just the bug that cropped up at other projects as well, where tasks crunched by either OS would get credit while the other OS wouldn't get it. |
