I think it is great that classic SETI is no longer accepting new accounts! IMHO there is no reason to join classic SETI at this late date. I am not in a desperate hurry and don't mind giving some people more time to rev up their credits, but the sooner SETI can devote all its resources to BOINC the better.

Two days and more than 400 users. Orbit@home is becoming now a real community, with people interested in Distributed Computing, Astronomy and Asterodis. Now that all the server problems seem to be fixed, we will enhance the website in gereral, adding a description of this project and also introducing the users to the Science related to Minor Planets in the Solar System. Everybody is invited to contribute, sending or posting to the forum possible orbit@home logos, graphics, related websites and everything can help building the orbit@home image and identity.

After less than one day, more than 100 user accounts created! Also still having problems with slashes in urls, we are working on that. As a reminder, we don't have any BOINC application yet, and the scheduler is not running, so the BOINC client will bounce off the orbit@home website without much work to do for now. Update: now the scheduler is running, the BOINC client should be able to connect, ask for work, and then disconnect because there is no work available. The client can also complain for "platform 'x-y-z' not found": this is because there is not an application available yet.

orbit@home website (re)-started! After a first test website yesterday, we decided to go directly with the BOINC website. This allows a uniform users management, and makes many other tasks a lot easier. User accounts can be created now, and we will disable it as soon as we will reach a user base of at least one thousand users, sufficient for the alpha testing phase. At this moment, the application is not yet ready for alpha testing. We will announce here the development news and the beginning of the testing phase.

IMHO they should already have stopped classic sign ups. BOINC SETI needs more computer power and they have already decided to go with BOINC. The sooner they terminate classic, though it did have some good features and did some pioneering work, the sooner they will have the use of all their equipment to devote to BOINC.

There have been many failures over the past week. Another bug was found (and quickly patched) in our upload/download file server causing it to hang until reboot. Once that was remedied, both the scheduling server and the main web server had separate issues due to extremely high load.

In case you haven't noticed, we recently changed the URL setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu - instead of pointing to the old SETI@home "classic" project, it now leads users to the new BOINC-based version. As expected, this vastly increased the number of new users joining the BOINC project, and therefore increased the strain on our back-end servers. Soon we will stop new classic account sign-ups altogether, and eventually stop accepting classic results outright (with advance warning) - each step potentially increasing the demands on our hardware.

At this exact point there is no new hardware that BOINC could use as its various servers fail for one reason or another. This is because the classic project is still active and using up half of our server farm. This was soon change.

The classic "master science database server" (a 6 CPU Sun E3500) will be the first machine to be repurposed. We're busy migrating most of its data onto a new database server (an 8 CPU E3500). This migration had been slowed by recent (recoverable) disk failures, but should finish in a month or so. Before then, however, we are going to move the BOINC scheduler onto it. The actual file upload/download handler will remain on its current server, thereby spreading the whole scheduler system over two machines.

As soon as possible, we will add a second webserver (and maybe a third). The BOINC web site contains far more dynamically-generated content than the classic site, and therefore needs more power behind it. We don't really have any spares, so some machines will have to double as web servers and whatever else they are currently doing.

And as if that wasn't enough to worry about, the BOINC replica database has continually fallen further and further behind the master database (because the load on the master increases and the replica hardware is relatively inferior). Then yesterday it was rendered useless as a binary log on the master got corrupted. This didn't damage the master database - only the replica. So we're going to have to build the replica from scratch (or hold off until we somehow obtain between hardware for that).

I got a new and improved graphic using BOINC 4.43 and mfoldB125, but only when it is running. I like the new graphic, now all my projects have graphics!

Hi folks,

I've seen people asking about what's been done and where this project is going. The first part of the answer is: If you've been clicking through the front page of the project, go back and read the recent announcements.

The second part is a more verbose version of what's on the front page: The first search of the S3 data didn't find a pulsar, but it did find a lot of strange effects from the instrument in the data. These need to be cleaned out before there's any chance of detecting an astrophysical signal. You folks, with your hot-running CPUs, did the important work of finding them so that they could be removed. We were expecting some of this (like 60Hz and all its friends from the electric company), but there was more than expected. So now you are all running S3 data again, but it is a cleaner version of S3.

And now an answer to the related question of where this is all going: LIGO has been operational for several years now, in the sense of being able to measure strains. But it is a very complicated instrument (absolutely unprecedented in some respects) and therefore it is not a matter of just switching on. The first time you do that, it's not very sensitive. You track down one of the many subsystems which is giving the most trouble and beat down the noise from that subsystem. Then the instrument is a little more sensitive, and you look for the next thing, and so on. Sometimes you have to invent something completely new to get past a sticking point.

The result of this is that LIGO has been shooting toward its target sensitivity for the last few years. It is now very close to that sensitivity. S3 is within a factor of a few. The S4 data, which is in the can and being prepped for analysis, is within a factor of two. S5, which will start later this year, will be at (or at some frequencies a little beyond) target sensitivity. Also, S5 will not be a few weeks' run between equipment upgrades; it will be a solid year, and that also improves the chances of detection.

The below is great news! We all know and understand science is a slow and uneven process, we would just like weekly news. I have copied and pasted the below in some other BOINC forums. My only suggestion is that it be posted in the front page news section of the LHC web site instead of the forums.

They are supposed to have a grid type of computer up which is similar to distributed computing, but much more powerful, when LHC opens in 2007. It is so ambitious, I am skeptical it can come about in two years. I believe BOINC is theoritically capable of storing information. I cannot predict the future, but I believe it is possible that as we get closer to 2007 when LHC will open, they may look to BOINC as a plan B back up if the grid system does not come off as rapidly as expected.

That sounds reasonable. It makes it possible for all to at least sample LHC and you can see LHC crunched on a wide variety of computers. After attaching and reattaching (resetting did not work) I finally crunched some units.>

Resetting with 4.19 did not work but when I detached and then attached with my old number it seemed to work, though I have not yet started to actually crunch a unit.

I reset with 4.19, got a download, but eventually always got an unrecoverable error. last attempt at 0000 UTC, will try again late Tuesday UTC.
