Posted 12 Apr 2021 by Contact Post: There are awesome additions to the Schedule for The 2021 BOINC Workshop. Steven Clark from nanoHUB has been added to The World of BOINC presentations on April 14 (only 2 sleeps from now) and Max Ryabinin from Learning@home has been added to Tech Talks on April 21. Vitalii Koshura - BOINC for Android, Steven Clark - nanoHUB (San Diego Supercomputer Center) and Max Ryabinin - Learning@home have been added to the Speakers List. The agenda for Community Discussion + Tutorials on April 28 has not been posted yet but World Community Grid Tech Keith Uplinger has an exciting announcement for that day: "I am planning on doing a tutorial similar to what I did in Chicago about setting up a BOINC server and running from scratch. My plan is to have it run on ubuntu 20.04 for ease of use for those to set it up." I received my login details to Day 1, "The World of BOINC", on Wednesday, April 14 several hours ago, so they are being sent out now. There's still time to Register for this free event. |

It may involve you needing to clone yourself, but reconsider re-opening the alpha site where you can mess around and maybe get helpful advice from those participants willing to jump in two feet first with you. |

Work Units making PC freeze
(Message 19235)
Posted 14 Mar 2008 by Contact Post: I have been running LHC for a while now but just lately the work units are making my computer freeze. I've also had troubles running LHC work very recently. Not only when the screensaver is running. It seems to bog down my machines (all are old and crappy) during specific times of calculation; possibly close to the beginning or end of the wu. On one very old machine I'm seeing blue screen of death with "Can't write to hard drive" errors only while running LHC work. |

Resigning due to short deadlines
(Message 9900)
Posted 3 Sep 2005 by Contact Post: With pref set to 4 day connect I noticed that hosts updated here in past 24hrs each downloaded 1 wu due in 4 days and 1 due in 9 days. An interesting attempt at compromise? |

Resigning due to short deadlines
(Message 9895)
Posted 3 Sep 2005 by Contact Post: Hi Heffed. Very much agree with your statements here except
To call them greedy or say they're trying to take over your machines is just stupid...
I don’t think it’s stupid, just too harsh to call them greedy etc. I guess it’s 1 of the BOINC hazards to consider wu’s as entities. To download a wu and then immediately have to process it because of deadline does make that wu appear rude. I can understand anyone being upset at seeing this behavior. Most of us understand the unique needs of this project and trust the folks involved to make the right decisions. I hope 5 day deadlines aren’t absolutely necessary but I am not in this for my own comfort and will try to contribute within the constraints. I still think all projects should be encouraged to strive for 14 day slack :-) |

LHC@Home is NOT a science project
(Message 9837)
Posted 2 Sep 2005 by Contact Post: Hi MikeW. I must confess to being a whiner. While I was doing the happy dance from Einstein@Home’s decision to allow my slow dial-up relics to complete their work with 14 day slack, I saw LHC@home deadline dramatically reduced. Travis DJ you very correct. Warning would have helped. Your frontpage news should be used as a template! But the deeper story here is that I see many BOINC projects with very short deadlines. I can see BOINC in the future being reduced to crunching 1 project at a time. This greatly reduces her beauty. I don’t see the devastation of allowing 7 days of slack. All projects should be encouraged to allow deadlines of 14 days or more. The hoarders and the slow-pokes will slow things down a bit, but in the long run of most projects it will be ok. I do not have the will to boycott short deadline projects but I will intervene with manager to make sure longer deadline projects don’t suffer in the short term. That’s my little protest. I admire LHC@home and many BOINC projects. I admire BOINC. We have a real chance of large progress! |

Network connection interval greater than wu deadline
(Message 9712)
Posted 30 Aug 2005 by Contact Post: Jeez. I just got over the excitement of Einstein giving us some slack on their tight deadlines, to be hit with this today from LHC. As much as I hope the 14 day deadline works for Einstein, I hope LHC will give us our slack back. But I trust the devs here will do what is right for the project. Oh well, most of us will try to roll with the punches. Just makes things not so easy... |
