I found out for sure and have sent in a few finished tasks here and vLHC

Just started a new task and we are back to normal again so time to start up a batch of new tasks here again.

Ye, indeed!

Well done Laurence! Condor seems happy again.

+1 and thanks for the quick response.

Okay, great. I'll let them go, then.

Hopefully fixed but will not know until the configuration has been refreshed (up to 4 hours)...

Thanks, Laurence.

I have a Theory and an LHCb task that are 11 and 15 hours into their work, respectively, and am wondering if I should suspend them for now. Is it possible that work will be lost if those tasks try to get another job or finish up while connectivity issues continue?

Sorry if starting a new thread is redundant, but I thought perhaps this discussion should be in a more general location...

Seeing a lot of these errors right now (for me, mostly Theory but also LHCb):

LHCb is a test application.

Thanks, CP! I missed any mention of that and am getting LHCb tasks now that I have test applications enabled in my preferences.

How is the priority selection of which tasks are sent to a host? My home computer has selected to accept tasks from all applications but it gets only tasks for LHCb...

I'm wondering this, as well. On my hexa-core 16GB RAM host, I allow CMS, Theory, SixTrack, and LHCb, but have yet to get an LHCb task. I run Atlas, as well, and have app_config files set to allow only 4 of the 2GB tasks to run at one time.

No problem, at all -- I think I understand. I have cross-posted in the BOINC forum and will wait to see if I get any response there. Regardless, being able to now view the jobs in the VBox manager is very helpful. Thanks, again!

BOINC in Linux uses separate account, so you need to run VboxManager under "boinc" username...

Thank you! :-) Can that line be added somewhere (without too much trouble for this Linux newb?) so it starts like that automatically or will I have to do it manually each time?

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to help the missing show graphics and VM console features in the BOINC manageer... :-(

Yes. So far, 11 tasks have completed successfully (10 Theory and 1 CMS).

(This is similar to a post here in the Q&A section. I'm re-posting in case it's more likely to get some replies in this forum.)

I just converted one of my hosts to Mint and am running VM tasks on a Linux host for the first time. I found it easy to install VBox and the extension pack, and have successfully completed several Theory tasks. It's not a big deal (I don't think) but running jobs are not being displayed in the VBox manager. I don't recall having to do anything under Windows and am wondering if there's another step or if there's a problem with the install.

I've also noticed that when a VBox job is selected on the "Tasks" tab of the BOINC manager, the "Show Graphics" button is grayed out and the "Show VM Console" is not listed on the lefthand side under "Commands".

Thanks for any advice.

Cheers,

MarkR

But for the 'new' crunchers over here, it's good to know that sometimes a Theory-job within the VM may run endless and will only be stopped by the maximum BOINC-task time of 18 hours...

I'm not sure this is relevant, but two of the Theory tasks I've completed recently (109863415 and 109863451) show a difference between the run time and CPU time of 9-10 hours. Are these examples of what Crystal Pellet is referring to? Would the project admins/scientists like to have these examples brought to their attention?

Sorry if I missed a better forum or existing thread to post this question. I know the Q&A section doesn't often get a lot of attention (especially the Unix/Linux section here, haha!), but I wasn't sure where to post a general question about running VirtualBox on Linux.

I really wish I could help, and I had done so for a couple of years. But no work has been downloaded to my machine for months. I am able to run setiathome with no problems. What can I do to grab some lhc tasks?

Unfortunately, this project doesn't have work available all the time. If you follow the "Server Status" link at the top left under "Participants", you'll see that there's not much work at the moment. When I want to run this project, I just leave it set for "allow new work" and, eventually, some tasks will come in.
