Hi everyone at LHC Staff.

Thanks for the interesting status report. I'm curious whether you're planning to reset the user rankings when you re-launch the system...

I personally consider LHC right now as running Beta, since it doesn't have many users and runs out of work as well.

What do you guy's think?

Sincerely,

thorsten

I think that resetting the rankings would cause a world war. :)

Seriously. They say the experiment has already produced valuable outcome... it's not a Beta, if it's able to generate useful scientific results. Moreover, if you call this a Beta, what would you call Seti? :)

My thanks to Ben Segal, one of the managers, for the status report. I (We) appreciate being kept informed about the status of the project. I hope, among other things, the CERN staff has learned that communication with the participants is very important. While the project is down, I hope they leave the fora up just to keep communication flowing.

CERN had an excellent team developing and staffing LHC@home. I hope they keep in touch with us through these fora. Further, when the project returns, I hope the new team is as good or better than the original team.

I was willing to take a credit reset before, I see no reason not to accept a credit reset after the project comes back up.

[EDIT]
@leaden,

Some people think SETI is still in ALPHA Test, with the problems they have had. These same people have probably never been involved in the development of a major system.

There is nothing to preclude a BETA Test from producing "valuable outcome."

I said above that I would accept a credit reset, not that I would necessarily like a credit reset.
[/EDIT]

Cheers,

Stephen

===========

And thats the way it will probably always be since the Dev's have already stated they have to examine the Work before releasing any new WU's...

And why would they reset the credits, they didn't after they went live because they found the work valuable, now after a few months later they wouldn't find the work valuable ...

To me it would be a slap in the face to have everybody run this many WU's & then reset the Credits on them ...

It's strange because I came to this project 2 weeks ago without being that interested in it. The only thing that mattered was that it was the most concrete project from my point of view (compared to SETI[waste of time], climate prediction [results not really bringing anthing useful], Folding [too abstract], etc etc etc).

Here I came to realise that maybe we were not searching for a cure for sida or something like that but at least we were doing something REAL.

I hope other concrete science project (perhaps space engineering projects or stuff like that) will one day use this technology.

When the accelerator will be complete, at least I'll be able to say "hey, It's a little bit thanks to me you know"

Keep up the good work guys !

As for my fellow crunchers, keep crunching !

Hello,
thanks for the report. If there is any way to suggest anything folks, I would you to wait with closing of this project for prector being up. When you close the project the only scientific stuff will remain CPDN, which is a strange thing.

I know there is seti, but seti is special.

regards,

On behalf of the Astroseti team I would like to say thank you for the information, thank you for all your good work and communication and also thank you for all the staff that has returned or will be returning to their original places.

Please keep a few days open for returning the units ready to report or what would even be better it would probably be nice to stop sending units a few days previous to temporary closure and so let all results be send back.

We will continue now, and will be awaiting for your reopening either in Dec, or early Jan 2005.

Yeah, I also think that would be a great idea.
They should be up in mid-November...

The good part of the reengineering of the backend systems is that they are replacing the job management and analysis systems, so even if they must continue to analyze our results before submitting a new batch, the delay should be much shorter than we've experienced in the past. If that is the case, then we'll be even happier with the second cut of LHC@Home. I wish them luck on procurring as competent a team as put together the first cut.

Finally, someone with the right perspective. If you read enough posts on enough project websites it seems all anyone talks about is credit and every little server hiccup. And by "talk" I really mean complain. The point of participating in a DC project is to offer help to the researchers. It's more tangible than just donating money. A chance for the little guy to dip his hand in science. The end result is what's important. Most people run more than one project so you as a user should never have down time.

And BTW this project keeps in touch with it's participants much better than some of the others out there.

Also check out this link for other projects to keep your CPU busy.
