What is done to get more than four WUs (when they become available again)? What preference setting is responsible?

Under general preferences the setting "Connect to network about every x days" is responsible.

I'm using the default of 0.1 days. If I connect less often does that give me more work in advance?

It will, but don't be too ambitious. The existing BOINC client isn't too good at calculating run time or prioritising work by deadline, so if you download too much or you attach to multiple projects you might not be able to complete it on time.

With deadlines of two weeks I wouldn't set the connect time higher than about two days.
