Hey all ! Even though I find life sciences to be more important, it's always fun to help discover how our world is made so I joined you recently ! :P Anyhow, will this particle accelerator help in the study of the other hypothetical dimensions ? I'm taling about parallele dimensions and all that stuff. Raph |

It has been proposed that while the ordinary forces all work in the three space dimension we know, gravity actually propagates through more dimensions than this. If this is the case the LHC should provide evidence of this. cern courier Christian Sttrup LHC@home Developer |

First, a story: back in the 16th century everything went around the earth - sun, moon, planets, etc. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with a geocentric model of the solar system, but the maths gets more and more complicated to account for retrograde motion and other anomalies. Suddenly, Copernicus came up with a heliocentric model and the maths became very easy. I can't help but think that current theories are becoming mired in a Ptolomeic model of physics. What we should be looking for is not 'extra dimensions' but a Copernican solution. If the LHC doesn't find the Higgs boson or evidence of extra dimensions (as I suspect it won't), what then? Do we build a VLHC and keep looking? Unfortunately, I don't have a grand theory in mind to back up this argument! Giskard - the first telepathic robot. |

How fascinating ! Our perceptions are so limited then and what I find more than incredible is that humans are using their brain trying to think "outside the box" to understand things that are beyond their perceptual reach. What is even more fascinating is that this is exactly what I'm studying right now in one of my classes (studying in psychology). Humans...such incredible critters :P |

It's the story of the human race. 1:We learn something new and contiue to learn at a fast pace 2:The learning slows down 3:Someone comes up with a radical new plan 4:No one believes that person even if he can prove it. 5:Everyone then start to believe (Go to One) I would say we are at stage 2 right now. |

In these days of being ruled by accountants and lawyers the following is very apt since they do nothing constructive themselves.... 7 Stages of a Project. Phase 1: Uncritical acceptance. Phase 2: Wild enthusiasm. Phase 3: Dejected disillusionment. Phase 4: Total confusion. Phase 5: Search for the guilty. Phase 6: Punishment of the innocent. Phase 7: Promotion of nonparticipants. Now you know why the heads of business and government are who they are! (sry off topic a little) Live long and crunch. Paul (S@H1 8888) BOINC/SAH BETA |

From May 2005 The first major contract signed for the LHC is drawing to a close. Belgian firm Cockerill Sambre (a member of the Arcelor Group) has just completed production of 50,000 tonnes of steel sheets for the accelerator's superconducting magnet yokes, in what has proved to be an exemplary partnership with CERN. ............ The yokes constitute approximately 80% of the accelerator's weight and, if placed side by side, would stretch over 20 km ! Read the full article, also in French, here. Best greetings from Belgium Thierry |
