I've just been informed that an important virtual machine (VM) is being moved to new hardware tomorrow night, starting at 1800, 01/04/2015. This is likely to affect our ability to provide jobs, but I'm not sure of the exact impact. The process is scheduled to take ~8 hours. Please take any mitigating actions you think reasonable.

On a not-so-related matter, my University position is being terminated today due to lack of funding. As per protocol, this means I will lose all my University IT access from tonight! I have secured a position as a Visiting Fellow for 11 months, but again as per protocol, I won't be granted IT access immediately. We're hopeful that I will get back most if not all my capabilities without much delay, but I'm not holding my breath. I have a similar problem with CERN IT, but they don't take such a draconian stance so there's a grace period during which I should be able to recover my facilities there.

Very sorry to hear your news about your university position and their incredible agility in cancelling IT accounts.
All the very best, Ben

Thanks, Ben. I did manage to get most of my accesses back again already so they weren't as scary as they pretended to be. I still have the problem of moving all my private emails away from the corporate Webmail though.

Yes, we are draining the job queues as new jobs dry up. Hopefully their time estimate will prove reasonably accurate.

It took them longer than anticipated, but we have jobs available again.
